If we are lucky enough to match, what can we expect for match day on Thursday, January 18th?

Do people hear first from their school's dean or the program director of their future residency? Both? At what time of day does this happen? Is it a phone call, email, or letter?

If we don't match, are we informed of this on Monday, January 15th, as in the regular match to allow for a scramble period? (even though I understand there probably won't be any spots available)

Any thoughts from those who have gone through this nebulous process would be much appreciated!

i think it depends on your school. at mine, the chair of my ophtho dept calls us to let us know where we match sometime in the morning. also, the place that you match at should also give you a call sometime that day but that does not always happen. you can call sf match on the 19th

i could be mistaken but you are not notified on jan 15th that you did not match. you would find out on the 18th that you did not match.

I think if you don't match, you don't scramble for a position prior to the match. With ophtho, i think you scramble for a position after the match date when vacancies are posted. It's different from ERAS.

Don't know what the dates are this year, but apparently the 15th and 18th???....You are correct that in the SF match(at least in the past) if you do not match the "scramble" day is a couple days after the actual match day. This consists of the SF match posting all of the unfilled positions. Last year there was "one" open position after the match. I put it in quotes because apparently the program did not post to SF match that they had a spot available. There are multiple rumors as to why this happened, but it may have had something to do with the school already filling the spot with someone at their home school, or that they did not want to be listed as the "one" spot that didn't fill, or possibly there was some error in the system. Regardless, if you do not match, in all likelihood you will have a VERY difficult time finding a "scramble" spot.
As for if you DO match, the other posts are correct. Everyone finds out a little bit differently every school has their own system between the PD/ophtho department/Dean. Find out how your school does it so you won't have to wait any longer than humanly possible. Also, I think most program directors from the program you matched into will call you(most not all). Some like to wait a day or two though to make sure that your school has informed you first. Either way, if you match in ophtho in general you should all be very happy and proud. It is a difficult field to match, but well worth the trouble! Good luck to all.
By the way, usually someone posts a link to the SF match exact guidelines so everyone can be 100% positive on dates/rules/regulations. I haven't seen that for this year yet...has it been done?

yes i posted the dates on another thread. here it is again. there is nothing on the 15th.

June 2006 We begin accepting requests for registration for the Ophthalmology Residency Match (OMP). Although we do not have any registration deadlines, it is in your best interest to register early so that you may have access to match materials as soon as they become available.
For your convenience an online directory is available for your review. This directory is updated by programs year-around. It is recommended that you check this directory on a regular basis.
Please note the individual deadline dates of each program to which you will apply.

Applicants who did not match may begin applying to these positions by negotiating directly with the programs regarding any documentation that they require. If the programs ask you to forward your CAS file, use the post-match distribution form to request your application to be forwarded to the program. There is a fee for this service.
