The title can be misleading since most would think that it belongs in the MCAT section. Here is my planned schedule for the next few semesters. I am a sophomore at a CC.

Fall 09 -
Bio 2 +lab
Chem 1+ Lab
Applied Physics
Trig

Spring 10-
Chem 2+Lab
Phys 1+Lab
Survey of Calculus

Summer 10 -
Phys 2+ Lab [12 Weeks]
Intro Microbiology Class (not taking the lab)

Fall 10 - (At University)
Organic 1 + Lab
Molecular n Cell Bio
Principles of Ecology

Spring 11 -
Orgo 2 + Lab
Human Morph + Lab 1
Genetics

----------Here is what I need to graduate with a BS in Bio--------------
Not listed in Images but required: Biochem 1, Genetics, Principles of Ecology, Molecular and Cell Biology.

These are Images that I made of some requirements. Community College advisers are stupid and tell me exactly what I already know. I want information about things I don't know. Such as what classes are good to take together that won't have me fail. Also what classes are good for the MCAT.
The ideal response post would be one that lists a schedule starting Fall '10 at the University. {Florida Atlantic University}

I also work 20 hours part time and I can't lose my job so I need a somewhat manageable schedule. I have good study habits so I don't mind studying for classes or staying up really late. I don't cram 🙂

Thank you.

This is my alternate schedule if I stayed at community college and THEN transferred to University.

Fall 09-
Bio 2+ Lab = 4
Chem 1+ Lab = 4
Applied Physics = 3
Trigonometry = 3
Total : 14 Hours

Spring 10-
Chem 2 + Lab = 4
Physics 1+ Lab = 5
Survey of Calculus = 3
Total: 12 Hours

Summer 10-
Physics 2 + Lab = 5
Microbiology = 3
Total: 8 Hours

Fall 10 -
Organic 1 + Lab = 4
Anatomy + Physiology 1 = 3
Total: 7 Hours

Spring 11-
Organic 2 + Lab = 4
Anatomy + Physiology 2 = 3
Total: 7 Hours

I feel that if I do stay at the Community College the extra year I might be more prepared for upper level classes. Although I would be spending an extra year in school + it's one year of potential doctor's salary lost. [Read last statement on this forum 🙂 ]

Thank you.

You'll want as many university classes as possible. Honestly, most CC classes will not prepare you for the MCAT. Take at least a physics and orgo at the university level. Otherwise you're good... maybe slap a biochem in there. Concentrate on getting that GPA above a 3.5 too... or if you're applying strictly to DO, consider some easy retakes to get it closer to 3.5 per AACOMAS calculations (replacing lower grade w/ retake grade).

The only thing that is bring my GPA down is a pair of C's I earned.

C in College Algebra [I know i'm retaking this eventually.. ]
C in Calculus [World of Warcraft > Studying ]
I'm still going to go to University after the community college. I'm just going to spend an extra year in school taking "intros" to higher lvl classes at the uni im transferring to.
thanks

Being as those Cs are in math courses, if you want MD schools as well, youve got some work to do. Fortunately DO doesn't count math as sciences so youre ok there. I concur though that you really need to get to a 4 yr asap. CCs are ok if youre getting As consistently but anything less than that is going to look pretty bad as CCs are not known for difficult classes to begin w and your competition for med school are mostly getting 3.5-3.9 GPAs at 4 yr universities in what will be assumed to be tougher classes than yours (sorry) w/ faculty who will write them LORs that simply have more weight than anything a CC instructor could write would not to mention the research and mentoring opportunities available & so forth.

Totally true. Thank to both of you.

Taking pre-reqs at a CC is fine, if you want to take higher level classes to prove you can handle courses, I would take upper level biology classes that would benefit you more in medical school. Ex: Genetics, Molecular Bio, Cell Bio, Immuno, Biochem, Histology,Neuro, Endocrin.
