I have searched this website trying to find more information, but my situation is different than normal. I took a one semester general biology class, but it does not offer a complimentary second semester class. Here are the two classes I have taken:

BIOL 1009 - General Biology (BIOL)
(4.0 cr; =[BIOL 1009H]; Prereq-high school chemistry; 1 term college chemistry recommended; fall, spring, summer, every year)
Major concepts of modern biology. Molecular structure of living things, energy recruitment/utilization, flow of genetic information through organisms/populations. Principles of inheritance, ecology, and evolution. Includes lab.

BIOL 3411 - Introduction to Animal Behavior
(3.0 cr; =[BIOL 3811]; Prereq-One semester of college biology; fall, spring, every year)
Biological study of animal behavior. Mechanism development, function, and evolution. Emphasizes evolution of adaptive behavior, social behavior in the natural environment. Lab.

Here are the only other classes I can take that are introductory course:

BIOL 1001 - Introductory Biology: Evolutionary and Ecological Perspectives (BIOL)
(4.0 cr; =[BIOL 1001H, BIOL 1003]; fall, spring, every year)
Biological diversity from genetic variation to diversity of species/ecosystems. Genetic, evolutionary, and ecological processes governing biological diversity. Genetic, evolutionary, and ecological perspectives on issues concerning human diversity, human population growth, health, agriculture, and conservation. Lab.

BIOL 1003 - Evolution and Biology of Sex (BIOL)
(4.0 cr; =[BIOL 1001H, BIOL 1001]; fall, spring, every year)
Evolution of sexual reproduction/genetics. Biology of sex determination. Human reproduction, development, and disease transmission. Scientific inquiry, history of evolutionary thought. Genetics, variation, behavioral ecology, human evolution, population growth.

I was planning on taking Biol 1003 next semester, but I do not know if it will fullfill the year requirement. Notice how they are lower division courses versus the Biol 1009 I already took. Can one of the two intro classes be used to finish the 1 year requirement? Will I have to take upper division courses instead of these? Any input would be great. Thanks.

I would say take Bio1003 because it sounds like it covers basic biological concepts that you will need to no for the MCAT. Also, I would suggest taking more upper level biology courses (e.g, genetics, anatomy and physiology microbiology, etc.) Just to study the material on the MCAT a bit, or a lot, more in-depth.
Just make sure you've taken two lab courses!

I was in a similar situation. I took bio 1009 (which was the only biology requirement for CBS a few years ago) and then the CBS curriculum changed to taking 2002,2003,2004 instead of just 1009. I was told by my counselor that I needed two semesters so I just took 2002.

But I bet you don't even need to take bio 2002 (Unless of course if you are a CBS major then you would need to take bio 2002, 2003, and 2004 to graduate from CBS). If you are not in CBS, you can just take an upper bio class like genetics (bio 4003) or cell bio (bio 4004) and it will count for the requirements for med school.

Would a different upper level biology class count? Like Evolution or Ecology? My major is currently Anthropology so these courses would be more relevent to my major.

I believe that Ecology counts since it is in BCPM. I am not too sure about Evolution. I bet it will count too. Anyone else who wants to verify this?

FYI, Ecology (bio3408) is soo much easier than evolution. (eco has a huge curve 🙂. )

Also, if you want to be safe. you can just take Bio 2002. It was an easy A, especially after 1009. If you just study 1 hr before class, you will be ready. (you don't even have to buy the $250 textbook, the magrath library has it).

I have a similar question. There are two semesters of general biology but I haven't taken the second semester. I have taken several other biology classes but just not the second one and was wondering if I satisfy the biology requirement.

I have taken:
General biology (intro) - 3 semester units
Microbiology with lab - 5 units
Anatomy with lab - 4 units
Cell/molecular biology with lab (1st of two semesters) - 4 units
Physiology (upper-division) - 4 units

I received all As in those classes..
Do I still need to take the second sem of the other biology?

Thank you!

Most med schools require only a year of bio and don't specify it to be an intro bio course. So, you can take upper level bio courses and it will count for it. Yes, you satisfied and exceeded this requirement.

Perfect! That sounds great to me. The reason I asked is because my counselor told me I need to take the second semester eventhough I have already taken the other ones. It just didn't make sense to me. 😕 thanks for your clarification!

Edit: the one I haven't taken is organismal biology. The 1st sem of biology that I took was cell and molecular biology.
