I want to get into medical school. I ultimately want to be a surgeon, but anything in the field (besides technicians) seems really interesting to me and I'll probably end up changing my mind on exactly what I want in the field when the time comes to choose.

I am a senior in High School, and I have a 3.25GPA, I am going to bring that up as much as possible, but I am not getting a free ride to Harvard. I will probably end up taking the ACT again because I have a 24 right now. I slacked off in the first two years of high school and only made Bs, but I started working hard as a Junior and I need some advice on what to do if I am to eventually get into a medical program.

I am looking at colleges near Dallas, TX. What should I specifically look for in a college? Should I look at the pre-med acceptance rate into medical school? I am doing research myself UT Dallas looks pretty good. If you know of any colleges that I could realistically apply for in the area please let me know.

Also, what should I major in? Should I major in anything medical or go for something else? Are there any majors in the medical field that don't require me to go to medical school? I dislike anything artsy, what factors should I consider in selecting a major?

Thanks for helping, I know what I want out of college I just don't know how to get there.

You're worrying too much. Just get into a decent college that has a good program in whatever major you're getting into. You don't need the best college to get into med school, while a name helps, a lot of doctors have went to small schools and have done great. To tell you truth, go to a school that is decent, yet the tuition isn't outrageous.

And when it comes to your major, they don't care, just get the classes need to get into med school done. Also, yes there are plenty of degrees and paths in healtcare that you can get into, look up these jobs on explorehealtcarecareers.com. But since you're talking about surgery, there's the tech, assistant/PA, etc. But, they don't seem as fun as being a surgeon.

Chillax. Undergrad honestly does not matter as much as what your GPA, MCAT score, and extracurricular activities do.

Your major can be anything as long as you complete the prereqs required by the med schools you will be applying to.

And try to set your goals closer to where you actually are... so instead of saying you want to be a surgeon, how about starting with getting good grades in college and making sure to use your time wisely? The first step is getting into a med school and you're not even in college yet. It's a long road.

1. Focus on a tuition that you can afford
2. Major in something that interests you
3. Make sure you do well in that major
4. If you don't make it into medical school, you better make sure you like your major.
