Army What comes next for a UQR?

I’m not confidant that my local HR people are giving me accurate guidance on this process, so I would appreciate anyone who shares the info so I will know if everything is getting done.

As of now, my UQR has been processed through HR’s HQ at Knox and I have whatever MFR resulting from that, which is signed by the HR Chief. I was told to go to local HR shortly after the New Year to request my ETS orders.

What else should I be doing in the interim? I know about the SFL program/course and need to sign up in person, but haven’t had a chance yet. The program’s website provides almost zero information on what it actually is, what I will have to do, and the timeframe I’ll need blocked off for doing it.

Other than requesting the orders and the SFL stuff, is there anything else?

Trying to remember everything here. The biggest thing is getting the SFL out of the way. How much that involves does depend upon where you're stationed. I know that at my first duty station, my outgoing partner ended up blocking off about 4-6 weeks to do this, because they refused to exempt him from anything. I was exempted from a lot, because I already had a job and a contract. I didn't need a course on resume writing. Even then I needed about two weeks (and not consecutively) to do everything, and I think I was being fairly efficient. Your HR person should have a list of required steps. They should be able to get that to you before you start, just so that you can schedule things.

Honestly, it was all so prolonged and all so stupidly useless that I think I blocked out a lot.... SFL is really an entire system designed for the 22 year old who joined right out of high school, never learned anything about job hunting, or how to open a bank account, or how to balance a checkbook, who learned really bad spending habits in the military and who has never had to live on his own on his own dime before. Everyone who doesn't fit that picture is just bored out of their minds.

One thing that will save you a lot of grief: go on to AKO and print out your list of everything CIF assumes that you have. Make sure you have it. If you don't, then go to a nearby Army surplus store and buy it. I had about 200 lbs worth of gear that just sat in my closet for four years. Others had much less...

Believe it or not, by receiving your RFO from HRC you have cleared the rate-limiting step. If you are due to separate sometime in June 2019 then you have plenty of time to do SFL (which is an utter waste of time but they typically acknowledge this fact when it comes to physicians and try to make it less painful).

In the meantime, get your gear together because returning all that crap is always annoying. I don't know what kind of a clinical environment you are in but if you have a successor inbound maybe spend some time getting them up with the battle rhythm. Your command will likely want one more OER. I stopped seeing patients about two weeks before my final out date and it took me a week to clear post.

Thanks. I guess I technically don’t have an RFO yet. I got the signed memo from the Chief of big HRC, and local HRC told me to come back in January to request orders. I think that means I’ll start the process to get an RFO in January. Hopefully that doesn’t take long.

Don’t have any gear to worry about. Very unusual experience in the military, which I’ll share after I’m out.

Possible replacement is here but everyone is being coy about whether she’s actually going to replace me — I don’t understand why. Regardless, I’m trying to teach her all the stuff I was left to figure out on my own.

Majority of the non-direct care clinical tasks are falling to me, within reason, but that may also be because I’m the most senior physician of my kind left here.

Other than that and their wanting me to take another APFT only 4 months after my last, I’m just waiting it out and trying to fit in interviews for my next gig and the other life things when I can.
