My school is doing this research contest. Basically creating a poster about a topic and informing the general public on it. Is this something I will be able to put on my residency app? Or does something like this not count?

The short answer is yes, you can put that on your residency app, and in fact that is the entire reason your school is doing this contest. Schools routinely put on these "research days" with the implicit purpose of giving you fluff to put on your residency application.

Unfortunately, it sounds like they're doing it wrong, because "making a poster about a topic and informing the general public on it" sounds like frankly the dumbest "poster" I've ever heard of. Schools usually do a better job of at least making it seem like maybe you did some real research rather than a half-assed literature review. You'll put it on there because there is no downside, but it will be painfully obvious to anyone who looks at your app that this was one of those "check off a box" kind of posters.

Yes! If you gear it towards lit review, it'll count as a research poster rather than a science fair poster.

ERAS seriously needs to separate publications from posters/presentations rather than grouping them in a single pubs category. Because having a poster like that and a peer reviewed journal article both viewed as ERAS research item = 1 is idiotic.

Present an interesting case you've seen during rotations and lit review (as mentioned above) to discuss the diagnosis.

Don't see why you couldn't use this as CV fluff.

On topic, I think that is a good start, but you should also look for other scholarly activities to add to your resume. Find an attending that sees interesting patients and write some case reports for them. They take an hour or two to write and are great practice for submitting to journals and going through peer review. They also give you a great topic to talk about at interviews.
