Here's what I've come up with:
1) 8 hour shift with 1/2 hour lunch break
2) Limited weekends (no more than every 3rd)
3) 4 weeks vacation per year

It's a pretty small list but I really think that's all it would take! Does anyone have all three of the above criteria and still hate their job?

There are plenty of factors besides how much time I had off that would determine how much I like my job. My job doesn't meet any of your three criteria, but I still like it quite well. I actually don't mind working weekends that much and have gotten used to eating on the run. Things that could make it better would be more tech help and not having to do flu shots! 🙂

Good tech support, overlapping shifts

Are you seriously asking this?

lol no kidding. drive thru is the biggest slap in the face to a pharmacist.

think about it, guy pulls up hands you an Rx, expects it ready in a mcdonalds fashion. insurance problem happens. guy wants you to get some "instore things" as well to ring out.

its evil

Not having to verify 680 scripts in a 13 hour shift by yourself?

that is a damn disgrace!!

Yeah my job sucks but I look at it this way, the crappier my employment gets the more inspiration I have to increase my other income streams so I can GTFO.

Can't believe that the standards for a good job have decreased so much. For me:
1) as other people said, 1/2hr lunch break and ample tech help
2)No quotas of any kind (flu shots, script count, etc).
3)No working register at all. I did not go to school for 6 years to ring up diapers. Of course I could walk to the register if counseling were needed, but having a separate "consultation" line would alleviate this.
4)With the above 3, having time to fully cousel the patients I want to counsel, and to check the patient"s profile every time for anything to counsel on. This would include medication adherence counseling for patients who do not pick up their meds on time, something no one does.
5)Being able to perform health screenings would be bice too, of course not having to do a million other things while doing them.
6)No transfer coupons or gift cards for a certain wait time. If we havee to take an hour, we take an hour.

Yep, I don't thin jobs like this exist, at least in cbain pharmacy.

Doesn't Walmart or Target close the pharmacy for a 30mn lunch break?

Target does, if there's only one pharmacist on duty. All Target pharmacists have a half hour lunch break. Also, the Target pharmacy where I'm currently doing my rotation has pharmacist overlap, so there are no 12hr shifts (I think their shifts are 8 or 10 hrs).

Having time to do proper counseling.

You need to make time to counsel buddy... youre crapping on the profession by conforming to the lick and stick persona... if they tell you otherwise... get your lawyer to send corporate a letter... theyll leave you alone. Document everything, all the time, who said what to you, exactly what and where they said it. Dont let them dictate how you practice pharmacy.

This is an exact description of the job I have now except i get an hour lunch because I can link up my 2 15 minute breaks with my 1/2 hour lunch. It took me very long to find this and my only advice is.....Keep your eyes open guys...

Honest question: Does this actually exist in retail?

It does where I'm working right now. I'm a floater for WAG, but I'm at a busy 24 hour store, where we have an 8-4, 11-7 and 2-10 pharmacist every day (except weekends). I get a 30 minute break every day. It's busy, like I said..but we have ample tech help (most days....) and it's nice to get a 30 minute break each day. I've never had a break at any other stores I've worked at.

Why does everybody want the 30min lunch? I thought this is a given. I work at a couple of pharmacies where pharmacists take more than >30min lunch. Most of them go out to eat (ie. taco bell), the drive there, wait in line to order/get the order, drive back, and sit down and eat. Most of them take >30min. 2. most of the Rx people are not flexible. for example, they take breaks EXACT every two hours. That is the law. and people strictly follow this law. now imagine there is a line and their two hour is up. 3. i see a lot of attitude in the pharmacy everyday. Rx people would treat the customers really nice then when i ask them a question, they turn into a mean person. some people don't get it that they work for the store not the customers. the customer does not work with you everyday, i do.

Break every 2 hours? I have never heard of this. Must only be a few states that do this. And many states do not have break laws, so a lunch break isn't mandated.

Oh, I take the time. I also take the guff from the other pharmacist for being "out of workflow" too long. 🙄
