Dental school applications are getting close so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on which dental schools I should apply to. I know there have been similar threads posted on sdn before.

sGPA: 3.43

AA: 21
TS: 22
Orgo: 23
Bio: 22
Chem:23
PAT:20
RC: 19

Extracurriculars: 100+ hrs shadowing, 200+ volunteer, intern at Maryland State Dental Association, helped with projects that provide free dental care to the underserved

Location: Georgia
Undergrad: University of Maryland

QR might hurt you but overall you are decently competitive. It's really your choice. Apply to your state school then the typical array of private schools: Tufts, BU, NYU, Nova, UOP, Roseman maybe. Ivy leagues to spice your life up. DCG has great in state tuition so I would shoot for that

What is your state of residence? If it's Georgia, obviously apply there because it is your best shot. Add Maryland because you did undergrad there.

Beyond that, you need to do your own research. Buy the ADEA guide or use doctoothache's guide posted at the top of the forum. Figure out where your stats are competitive and how many OOS applicants a school interviews and accepts. Beyond that, read up about each school. Only apply places you would actually go if accepted!

I'd apply to 10-15 schools. Maybe 2-3 "reach" schools, Georgia, Maryland, maybe 5 public OOS friendly schools, about 5 competitive private schools, and then some private "safety" schools.

You should definitely land interviews if you apply intelligently and broadly. Good luck!

Isn't Georgia the cheapest school? That would be my recommendation hands down.

Don't take this as being unnecessarily mean::: You need to up your shadowing hours before June. Georgia is your best bet and you need 200+ shadowing hours for there....

Everyone else's comments was spot on imo. I think you'll do great this cycle!

No, any recommendations would be helpful! Does Georgia in particular require 200+? I had expressed concern to my advisor about my shadowing hours and she said I was fine with 100+. The issue is I'm taking 18 credits and doing a 15 hour/week internship right now so I barely have time to even eat lol.

Would you suggest applying two weeks late and shadowing to get my hours to 180?

Do not apply late! You can always update schools with shadowing hours after you apply.

I would check out this excel sheet: 2014 Shadowing Requirements/Recommendations

Don't apply too late. You don't have to do the first day, but I think within the first 3 weeks? I think someone else should chime in on "when it is still early?"

2 weeks is not a big deal at all. 2 weeks after the cycle opens most people will not even have their GPA and DAT verified yet.

Maybe I'll contact the school and see what they suggest? Thank you for your insight!

Up to you. The school provides deadlines for application submissions. If you apply mid-June it will not hurt you at all. AT ALL. Once you start getting into the August-September time-frame should you start getting worried. But by mid-June interviews haven't even started. You have nothing to worry about.

I applied late July. Took DAT mid-Aug. Scores were verified (and app officially complete) by late Aug. Did quite well this cycle and excited to be starting dental school this fall! Just make sure everything is in by 9/1! Good luck!!

So you think I should just wait and apply June 15th? Then I can apply with 200+ hours shadowing. Also do you know where you will be going for school?
