For those that submitted paper applications, how did you turn them in.

Did you just put all the papers in an envelope and send them off, or did you put them in a binder, or did you staple it all together?

Do the universities have a preference?

First, no staples. Use paperclips if you like (especially useful if you have things that actually need to stay together, like a two page SOP), but some of the materials may need to be photocopied at some point and staples are a bit of a hassle. (Also, if anyone reading this already used staples, don't panic. This is not going to make or break your application 😛.)

I put a "summary sheet" (something like "To whom it may concern, I am applying to the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at X University. The following materials are enclosed...") on top of the pile of materials, shoved it in the envelope, and sent it all off.

Just a thought: when I had to submit paper apps, I used big envelopes so that nothing had to be folded. Once recieved, everything goes into a file (and it will get copied for multiple profs to see) and it's obnoxious when you're dealing with folded up papers. Plus the original looks nicer.

In an envelope (flat) that went into a document envelope/box. Everything stays flat, and the envelope helps keep everything together, since they probably will toss the mailing stuff once opened.

So no one would put them in a presentation folder or anything?

Just loose in an envelope. Totally cheaper than what I was thinking of doing. 😀

the secreatary would probably just throw out that presentation folder because they will have file your stuff. Your POI will probably never see how much money you spend in order to let them know that it really means a lot to you going to their school 😀

Oh yeah, no staples, no folders, no rose-scented pink stationary...

As others have mentioned, many schools will just file your application, and it would be a pain in the rear for my secretaries and assistants to have to dig your applications out of extra junk. You're better off spending your time checking to make sure you are sending everything to the right school in the right envelope, and that you didn't accidentally have some other POI's name in your essay because you were copying and pasting. Don't laugh. It happens. 😱

Lilac's okay though, isn't it? I mean no rose, obviously - it just screams lack of intellectual rigor, but I think lilac gives a different impression altogether.
