I'm a 3rd year medical student and I am becoming increasingly interested in Obgyn as a specialty. I love everything about it, but I know that one can easily get pulled into a schedule where you have absolutely no free time, you're either doing clinic, surgery, or delivering and there's little family time. I have a wife and three daughters, and family time is important to me. I just finished rotating with a group who has an interesting practice schedule: there are 7 of them and they each take a 24 hour day to be "on call", where they stay at the hospital. That one on call person may have a surgery day, but they don't leave the hospital and they are the ones who do all the deliveries. Then they take the next day off, and are back in the clinic or hospital for the other week days. That means that a woman who comes into the hospital on a given day to deliver will be delivered by whomever happens to be on call that day. I really like this practice style, but is this a common way to run a group? What are other ways that Obgyn offices are scheduled to give the doctors a little personal time?
