Since I am a clinical psychology PhD student I get confused when I read things like "PGY-2" and "M-4." Yesterday, I was reading a note from a psychiatrist with whom I share a patient and her sig block read "PGY-3"

For us, it's simple. You are one of these categories:

1st year (Coursework)
2nd year (Coursework + practicum)
3rd year (Coursework + off site practicum)
4th year (dissertation year + optional off site practicum)
5th year (Internship year)
then you are a PhD with no license.
there is usually a post doc internship year (The Army now requires this year and calls it "Fellowship") used to accumulate enough hours to take the EPPP. You pass that, and you are a licensed clinical psychologist.

This is very general, as it varies from school to school and state to state, but it basically holds true.

As for the med school ones, can someone explain these to me? Just curious.

PGY= Post Graduate Year. So PGY-3 would be a 3rd year resident.

M1-M4 correspond to year in medical school. For example a med student in his or her second year of studies would be known as an M2. This is like a student in his or her second year of high school being referred to as a sophomore. PGY on the other hand refers to students who completed medical school and are in training. PGY3 would be a resident in his or her third year. I believe it means post graduate year, but I could be wrong. I will be starting med school in the fall so I am not to familiar with other acronyms that may exist. FYGME I think corresponds to first year graduate medical education and I believe is used only in the Armed Forces. However, I may be wrong.
