I know they look at your GPA. But do they have access to your NBDE scores? Because I thought it was pass or fail.

My 2 cents:

From my experience ( I have been applying since last 3 years) It is not any particular thing they look. It’s a whole package in order to get at least interview invitation from them. I realized NBDE/TOEFL score are just initial exclusion or inclusion criteria because they get lots of applications every year. After that they look at your whole profile which includes your dental work experience/ research as well. I am sure getting good LOR from here in USA is the key. It should make your application strong compared to others. Again all these criteria would help just to get invitation from Dental school for interview.

After getting interview, it’s a different ball game. Now most of the school has bench test except few. Once you get interview you got to work hard for bench test and interview skills. Don’t wait for interview to start preparing for bench test. I made a big mistake by waiting for interview then start preparing for bench test because after you get interview you won’t have enough time to prepare for bench test. Get some help from expert people for bench test. Form a group so you can get feedback on your prep. There are few bench test course out there that you can try.

And big part is how you perform in your interview. You got to present yourself as a strong candidate in interview. Because no matter how well you do in bench test if you don’t do well in interview then all your hard work will go in vein. Same applies to vice versa.

Overall don’t loose hope. I did not loose hope for last 5 years. At the end hard work pays off. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t get into. There is always chances out there to get your profile stronger. Just keep yourself involve in Dental field. Go and see your local dentist in person and work with them. Go to local community hospital and do volunteer work. This way you can develop your communication skills and confidence.

Hope this helps.

How are the bench tests structured? Where can the material be found in order to prepare for the better?

You need to be prepared for all basic procedures to be ready for surprises
Most often it is gold or PFM crown and class 2 amalgam cavity preparation.
To prepare you need American textbooks, some online resources- just be sure they don’t contain any mistakes
