I am currently 22 and am covered under my parents' healthcare insurance plan. I will be moving to another state for medical school. I will be calling my medical school on Monday but I wanted to know what are my options in this situation before I call so I don't sound totally naiive during that phone call.

1) stay on your parents plan
2) buy your own plan through the market
3) every school has an institutional plan you can buy

Most insurance companies will let you stay on your parents plan as a dependent until age 26. Ask them to look in their policy, so you’ll have more facts on hand when you ask your school.

It’s federal law that you can stay on your parent’s plan until age 26.

Unfortunately, I turned 26 about nine months before residency would cover me. If you find yourself in this situation, and you’re healthy, there are non-ACA approved insurance plans that cover certain medical issues like trauma, accidents, etc. You can only have them for less than 1 year. They are also way cheaper than getting real insurance. Just make sure you read the fine print.
