I am posting this because I think medical students and residents should strongly consider a career in medical school administration. There is likely a shortage of these uniquely qualified individuals.

Interesting post. I was a bit suprised at some of the numbers reported.

Also, a point to consider, is that many of the faculty who are physicians also have a private practice with income from seeing patients. Add that to what they are making as administrators and professors.

Where did you find that info? Is there a website?

I wonder what the dean of a state medical school makes. i bet it's not 400k. everyone sing along.. there is no business like the DO school business, there is no business i know....

Get this, LECOM'ers - Dr. Silvia makes more than Dr. John??? (There are so many Ferrettis and Espers at LECOM that they all go by their first names)

There are theories as to why LECOM makes so much money - a rumor that has been propagated from class to class (I'm not sure if it's true but it's possible)...I had heard that LECOM is one of the most profitable medical schools in the country. And with FLECOM it will be even more profitable soon.

FYI, Ron Esper used to be the president of the AOA (for those who are interested in little LECOM facts 🙂 )

I find this post highly inappropriate and unprofessional.

Sure, this information is public record, but it could have been reported in an unidentified way.

The information is public record. Sorry you find salary information offensive but these people are accountable to the public.

Non-profit companies/organizations file 990 forms with the IRS every year. They are required to report the incomes of their 5 highest paid employees. You can find the info at www.guidestar.org... It is really quite interesting stuff. You can check out the mayo clinic, etc.

You have some serious issues.

Just because we CAN do something doesn't mean we SHOULD.

Serious issues? Like ethics? Hell, yeah.

I think students have a right to know where their tuition dollars are going.

I know my where my tuition money is going. I see it parked in front school most days, in the assigned parking space right up front that says president.

More like irreversible tightening of the sphincter. Do yourself a favor and have a drink or 20.

It just seems a bit tacky to me to report an individual's name with their salary.

It's beyond the bounds of good taste.

The OP could have listed positions and salaries without naming names, and students would be just as informed as to where their tuition was going.

Perhaps I am showing my age...

Speaking of tacky.... How tacky is a president(ceo) of a "non-profit" making 400k a year? I'm not sure exactly how that would read on the tack-o-meter. How far below good taste is that?

UHS:

Is in Kansas City, MO

On our list, at least half of them are practicing DO's (not the president or a few others).

M.

Oh yeah, and the current lineup is a bit different.

DMU's list is outdated as well. The new prez used to be the governor of Iowa, along with other shifts in the positions of the names on the list posted above.

I'm paying THAT MUCH money to PAY THEM for THAT!

1. Denial 🙄

2. Disbelief 😱

3. Sadness 🙁

4. Anger +pissed+

5. Sickness

6. Acceptance (with the help of our friend, Paroxetine)

Yeah, I don't understand how they can call themselves "non-profit" either when they are earning so much money.

I was pretty bummed that the availability of salary info for state schools is limited. I bet there is a way to find out though!! 🙂

Runita is definitely showing some age.

How fair would it be for me to post a list of "positions" from the year 2001 and attach salaries to those titles. The same people might not be in those positions today, the new people in those positions now might be getting paid less than their predecessors and be upset by those dollar figures being attached to their titles, etc.

When individuals take positions at non-profit/not-for-profit corportations they know that their salary information is accountable to the taxpayers. Reason being that we taxpayers (I can say that now since I actually get paid...couldn't say that in med school, hehe) subsidize the existence of those institutions through tax breaks. The individuals and institutions need to be accountable, which is exactly why this is public record.

Furthermore, the DO school COMP/Western is in financial scandal right now and their local newspaper has already published these figures for many of its administrators. Why should we shun away from information that is public record?

Plus, did you see some of the titles on that list? I think knowing "who" the person was behind the title helps to understand what exactly the "do" (CPO, CFO, construction manager doesn't tell you much).

Finally, the list is a heads up so that people know the excellent earning potential for academics in the DO world, and thereby may serve to attract more qualified candidates to these positions.

Compare to local companies, these salaries are quite "modest" or even small. They are big to us but remember this

Presidents of schools are like CEOs. They must run the school with its competing departments, and manage funds that are in the millions (or billions)

Unlike CEOs, however, school presidents have multiple groups to please - the faculty, students, alumni network, potential students, the general public

School Presidents are also "fund-raiser in chief" responsible for sollicitating donations from alumni and rich donors to either increase their endowment fund, scholarship funds, or fund constructions/improvements on campus

And to do all this, they need to be well compensated. You need to offer a nice salary in order to get good administrators. Would any of you want the job and responsibility of being a dean of "University of BIG SCHOOL" with a salary of $50k? How about $100k? If your medical school paid its president and dean only $100k/year, would you really get the "best man" (or woman) for the job?

These salaries may be high but they are consistent with national figures.

The president of Temple University made $368,725. Penn's Judith Rodin made $893,174 (salary and bonus and benfits included) last year, making her the highest paid President.

However, check out some company CEO's salary. They may be in the millions (some getting bonuses for laying off people to save money). We're not even playing in the big leagues in term of monetary compensation, where severence packages may range in the tens of millions.

Just want to keep things in perspective.

Also - FYI, the President of the United States makes $400,000/year. The vice president's annual salary is $186,300.

Interesting, eh 🙂

That's just wrong that the president of Penn makes more money than the president of the most powerful country in the world.

Trust me: even dept. chairs make this and much at private allopathic institutions; its amazing how many people think that US medical schools are without any business interest.

NSUCOM is apparently the most profitable medical school (was when I was there). NSUCOM started with teh DO program only, but once that started pulling a profit, NSUCOM has grown to have an OT, PT, PA, Pharm.D, OD, pre-med (ultimate money making machine, just let these people sit in on a few classes!), Dental, Law, Psy.D, et al.

Q, DO

Well Hugh Hefner makes more than all of them...that's not truly fair either is it? lol

Fair?!? Of course it's fair. Hugh Hefner does much more for this country than the president .

If our president would just take 1% of that income and put it towards getting some strong affiliation with some strong state hospitals our students would be so much happier. Or maybe take .5% of that income and hire someone who could candidly advise some of our students on how to persue viable career options.
I guess thats where ALL of our 4th year income goes, right to those 5 top people. Enlightening post.

I am with you...I think they should put some of their income to becoming affiliated with bigger hospitals, hired better staff, and developing the school into a place where better students and staff would want to be.

I don't think this is tacky at all. We should know where our money is going. It makes me very happy to see that we were lied to last year by our dean who "told" us where all of the money went. After seeing these salaries, I'm still not sure where it's all going. I do know, however, it's not going into making the school better. I wish someone could post how much money the schools bring in a year and where it all goes.

This is just outstanding.

That's why doctors hate admitting patients and working for academic medical centers. The hospital sucks up part of their income as part of what everybody refers to as the "dean tax". It is ridiculous that someone would get paid so much for what is essentially a 10am-3pm job with a few social events during nights and weekends and so little actual job responsibities. I've always thought that it was like how CEO's of corporations get paid so much, it starts to be an insider I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine once you start dealing with these boards and trustees.

By reiterating a statement that Babe Ruth said directly to Warren Harding, at least Hefner has had a better year than the president. Hey, Hugh knows where to find the "Weapons of Mass Destruction."

Looking at the salaries of some of the faculty members at my school, it may show some validation to why school tuition has gone up 2K per year since I've been in med school. Those salaries indicated by each med school could be actually higher.

I had a recent thread started in the International Forum that caused some to complain that profs names were posted in association with a student's negative reveiws of them. The said lead post remains as posted verbatim. The matter here is similar.

Despite a level of discomfort I feel at it, these foks are PUBLIC individuals and it should not be taboo for this information to be public. I think it is, in the sum, good for both society and medical edu in the overall picture of both.

Don't be a socialist

These salaries are not out of line. Some of you have no idea of the responsibilities these positions carry. Great Doc's can make much more in private practice, so there must be some incentive for academia other than just altruism.

Have you whining posters worked in industry? My gut feeling is that the perturbed people are young and have never been in the working world. $200K - $400K is not a lot for an accomplished doc. Red Cross is Non-Profit too, but I bet the CEO makes more than these folks. Remember, real life is supply and demand. Also, don't forget that the higher you go in business, the more volatile the position, i.e. job turnover is typically higher.

If you want a chuckle, check out what a Pastor of a large, successful church makes. I bet they are in line with these numbers.

The CEO of pfizer pharm. makes $3million a month.

How's that for a salary?!! 😱

So that has anything to do with non-profit organizations how? 🙄
