what do pharm techs do

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not where I work. And I hope not where you work either.

Well. Here is what I do.

1. Type new orders, print label for RPh to check.
2. count pills (maybe 20% of the time, the rest of the time RPh does it), For class 1 and 2, RPh does it.
3. take refill orders from Pt
4. Take refill authorization from Md
5. Order drugs from manufacture
6. Give out drugs to Pt
7. Look sexy for the ladies.
I work in california, where everything that i mentioned is permitted.

^^same here, i do all of that. Plus, I mix suspensions, call insurance companies about crap, etc...

oh yeah. I do that too. Adding approprite amt of water and shaking is easy comparing to techs who make Chemo's and IV's in hospitals.

Honestly, for what we do, i think we should have our salaries doubled.

retail clerk & tech = pharmacy slave labor

i have no idea who would pursue being a retail tech as an end-point career...it's basically a glorified clerk with a license to count pills and mix things. You do all of the leg work and still get paid crap. My friend gets paid as more as an admin assistant and she deals with 1/4 of the BS that the techs deal with (rude patients, stupid insurance errors, etc...)

yeah and the tech's where i work are all very intelligent. They know trade/generics well, can find stuff on the shelf instantly, type fast, know abt insurances. They just don't have the financial means to get additional education, but certainly the intellidence for it. I think the max a tech can make where i work is 16 or 18 bucks, which is typical for retail chains.

One pharmacist told me that in independent pharmacies, a tech does about 75-80% of the work. I don't know if it's true, but i wouldn't be surprised.

BTW, for those who are wondering, an intern pharm does everything that a tech does and counsels pts, as well. However, they still can not do clincal review, which is final step before a pt receives the meds.
