What do Pre-dent & Dent students need??

Hey SDNers,

I'm a dental student doing a study on the demands of pre-dent and dental students. I wanted to create an open forum regarding what students preparing for dental school need. Obviously you'll need things like text books, and study materials, but what else? In addition to scholastic matters, what else do you need to stay entertained throughout school. I am trying to keep this as open-ended as possible, but just remember - NOT what you WANT, but what you NEED. Someone kick us off.....

Not sure what you are asking for but:

A hobby of some sort to escape the stress and pressure, at least for an hour or two.

You'll need to collect lots of extracted teeth.

A basic tool kit (**** breaks)
A sense of humor
Clothing (appropriate to your school's dress code)

after that, I'm not exactly sure what you mean...cause I could list all sorts of basics like pens, loupes, backpacks, a phone etc. but those are kinda obvious.

And as for keeping yourself entertained...well, those are "wants" which you said not to list. I mean, I keep myself entertained by golfing and surfing, but I don't think of a surfboard, golf clubs, and $ for greens fees as "needs."

It totally depends on what school you go to and what your school requires and/or provides. I think the only thing that is universally applicable is money. Lots of money.

we need tuition to be lower, and a national board exam so we can practice anywhere we want regardless of where we went to school.

A life outside of dental school. While your career is important, its not the most important thing in life.

I NEED to not be labeled as a pre-dent student. It pisses me off like no other. I am a person first and foremost, who happens to be a student and just happens to be applying for dental school.

I NEED to be frugal in my spendings.

I NEED to party every once in a while.

I NEED to have people around me who can help me because I cannot do everything on my own. I NEED to reciprocate their help to avoid using people and acting selfishly.

-PDA? -- I guess more of a want

In terms of living (cheap)

These are all a few of many many things some of you, most, or all of you may NEED while in undergrad, or in dent school. Keep the list going, I'll need more participation.

i need underwear? probably more than 1 pair, maybe closer to 2-3 weeks supply so i dont have to do laundry too frequently...
i need a good friend?
i probably need a pair of waterproof boots to walk in the snow from class to class during the winter months
i may need a pair of dress shoes and a nice suit/tie/shirt combo that presents professionally..

are these the specifics you are talking about? just seems really redundant to me... what's the point?
