what do these terms mean?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
URM = under-represented minority
EC = extra-curriculars
MD/PhD = combined degree program to get both an MD and a PhD
MTSP = Medical Scientist Training Programs (MD/PhD programs)

URM-- under-represented minority
EC-- extra-curricular activity
MD/PhD-- program to get your MD and your PhD at the same time
MSTP-- medical science training program. see md/phd.

🙂

You can do an MD/PhD without doing MSTP. MSTP is federally funded (I believe they include living stipends and full tuition), so they are more competitive to get into. Also, not every school that offers an MD/PhD is part of the MSTP.

MSTP=NIH funded MD/PhD program-includes tuition waiver and stipend. There are about 40 MSTPs nationwide.

MD/PhD=funding from sources other than NIH (may include some NIH funds). MANY pay a tuition waiver and stipend. Almost every allopathic school has some form of an MD/PhD program.

Both MSTP and non-MSTP MD/PhDs are competitive programs.
