oh yea that one sticky over there...

I enjoyed reading through it. 🙂

Derek, I was wondering. What's yours source for the 120K income average? I found it to be 150K in a recent survey by medicaleconomics.com. Do you have a more official source?

Anyway, great work. 👍

looks great. thanks for all the hard work. 👍

Ditto here on the 150ish range...found in multiple sources (AAFP being one of them).

Solid work on the Sticky Big D! Thanks!

Just skimmed through it...but it looks like a lot of great information. Good job!

Thanks for your time. I think its important to get an insider's view and especially to get a sneak peak at the business side.

Derek,
Awesome post! That was way cool of you to take the time to organize and post all the good info.

Thanks alot!!

just read it.

very well done.

Very cool! I have a question Derek. I loved the information about types of practice. This seems to be interesting to me and I'm leaning towards FP because I love the idea of flexibility in types of FM practice and niches to include. The following are several points that are most important to me when considering my medical career. 1.Time for my family (we have no kids yet, but soon) is very important part of my life, so I want to be able to enjoy that part of my life and have time to be a good father and husband. Therefore I really would prefer limited call if possible, but not sure how this is possible aside from smaller patient load 2. I admit I would like to make at least 150+ 3. Continuity is very important to me in regard to my patients 4. I would like to do a variety of proceedures 5. EM is a strong second choice for me.

I'm wondering if you can generalize a type of Family Medicine practice that may meet all of those points of importance to me? I'm considering that I may like to have only a small to moderate patient load for Family Practice, while supplimenting income by a few regular EM shifts (fast track type). Could you give me some breif ideas / a scenerio in which you envision a family practice design, or what I could do to that could allow for this while making the desired income mentioned? Feel free to modifiy my rationale of small/mod FM with a few part time EM shifts.

Thanks for you thoughts, great sticky!
Michael

bigdreamer,

I want exactly what you want too. So, I hope Derek can give some insight to both of us!

Hello,
You can have the type of practice that you want. The beauty of FP is that it can be tailored to your personal needs. If you read the FAQ, it is possible to have different types of practices (outpatient only, inpatient only or mixed). Seems that you want mixed. It can be done with some ER moonlighting on the side. Perfectly feasible, HOWEVER....You must temper that with the REGION that you are in. Some regions are more open to FP's working in ER than others.
I cannot comment on the income thing. That is subject to the variables that I described above. Keep in mind, you make $$ by seeing patients. If you don't se patients, you dom't make $$, so low patient volumes may translate into less $$, so keep that in mind.
Thus, I would tell you that REGION PERMITTING...you can have that type of practice that you want. Hope this helps. PEACE!!
