What do you drive?

'99 sunfire that has a new engine (don't ask). I gave it to my husband as a commuter car b/c it's fantastic as far as that goes. He looks a little silly in it. You know big guy little car but he's okay with that. If vet school comes into view then it will be mine again until it just stops moving. For now I have the Jeep! Ah.... the Jeep it rocks and my dogs have more room. Did you know you can fit three German shepherd's in a sunfire? They all have to sit up in the back seat though! Hilarious.

2005 Ford F150 4x4 and I love it. It great for eating gas and pulling a horse trailer. I am just hitting 41k miles.
To the person that asked about the size of truck and trailer. Make sure you have a truck built to stop your trailer! These days they try to sell trucks by how much weight they pull. But dont fall for it. Any truck can pull a trailer but the real questions is whether it can stop it or not. I pull a 2 horse trailer with my f150 mostly with just 1 horse so its not bad. But if it was loaded and I was goign through mountains I would have a problem.

2000 Honda Civic. It's paid for and in great shape! I'll keep that car for awhile.

2005 mini cooper s - just rolled over 50K. It makes me sad. 😳

Me too! Except mine isn't sporty sporty turbocharged.

I have to say goodbye to my beachy beater this week....a 1996 Toyota Camry with nearly 160K on it. And all of those miles were racked up on this tiny island of Oahu!

1999 Ford Escort ZX2 sport; only 65,000 miles.

It's functional, reliable and burnt orange!

I just had to replace a tie rod and get an alignment (230 bucks! ouch!), but that's the most I've ever had to do to him- he's totally low-maintenance. I'm not that lucky though- what I save in care costs I make up for in parking. It is $$$ to keep a car in the city.

I ride a 1998 Kawasaki KLR650 it is what keeps me sane when school gets crazy. It is equally at home as much on the street as in is on trails in the woods🙂

I also drive a 2000 ford Contour that had a run in with a deer a couple years ago, I am just waiting on it to quit as it has had a rough life

So, are any of you thinking about selling or trading in your beloved vehicle to help with financial needs through the next 4 years? I'm asking because I'm finding myself in a predicament and I need more than what I'm getting for student aid.

If you own that 2007 Envoy, could you not just sell it, buy a real cheap older vehicle and use the proceeds to make up the difference? If you're making payments, get rid of it anyway! No-one needs a vehicle like that while they're a student - especially with the current gas prices.

Sure, nobody NEEDS a car like that. But when you've been living a certain way for awhile you become accustomed to things like your car. I really don't want to part with it, but if I have to I suppose I will. I just want to know if anyone else has done the same thing, if it worked for them, etc.

Sorry, but when it comes to gas prices, I would have absolutely no problem ditching a vehicle that I am "accustomed to" in order to save some cash. Of course, I have a 50 mile round trip to school (and even at current gas prices driving is cheaper than renting), and I spend $43.65 ($0.17/mile) a week in gas during the semester driving my car (23 MPG). In contrast, my motorcycle gets 70 MPG and I spend under $15 ($0.06/mile) a week in gas. Its really a no-brainer when it comes to finances.

Just my $0.02.

love this thread...
I drive YAMAHA Vega R. 2005. sporty design. i love it 🙂

I've reached more than 45000 km on it 🙂

This doesn't answer your initial question, but just some additional info. Fort Collins is a very bike friendly place, I couldn't believe the number of bike racks on campus when I first moved here! So anyway, just a way to save on gas. Also, they are good about de icing the roads in winter and as long as you have a good set of tires on a non 4x4 you would be fine.

1999 Toyota Corolla, (Dark) Teal. But I try to drive it as little as possible (70,000mi). I expect it to be there in 2019, and it'll have <140,000mi 🙂

I prefer to commute by bike. Fuji Cambridge w/commuting enhancements. I may get an even more commute-friendly bike in the future.

My everyday car is a 2000 Dodge Caravan...I do a lot of driving around and it hauls the horse food and doggies...

My baby is my 1970 Chevelle. I bought it from Florida (I live in MASS) not a speck of rust on it. It has 30K miles and is a GORGEOUS green with green metal flakes in it. I dont drive it to often, but when I do there are a lot of comments on him. I plan on selling him this summer because I have figured that it isnt to pratical at this point and time. It isnt easy paying for two insurances (plus the 4 horses) and I dont dare take it to school because I am afraid someone is going to scratch it. But still I had it for 3 years and I will get another down the line after vet school.

My baby is my 1970 Chevelle.

That is my husband's DREAM CAR. Is it a 454? Oh man. You should bring it to Oklahoma and sell it to us... exactly what we need right now . But, my baby loves cars, and that's his #1 dream so I really hope we can have one someday. Me, I just want permission to have a ridiculous amount of pets. 😉

No it is a 350. When I bought it the guys were going to make it into an SS so I got it cheaper than what they were going ask for it afterwards. When I go for a road trip I will surely stop by. That would be a haul...From Mass to OK...😀

2007 VW Rabbit. 2 door. It's RED! I LOVE IT!

(Which means I have no choice but to find a part time job to keep paying for it... I only have two years of payments left, I'm so close.)

But I didn't get my drivers license til I was 22 so I remain a professional walker. Under 2 miles to school? I walk. Five miles to the grocery store? Buy a heavy duty backpack. And walk. And get waterproof shoes and a big umbrella.

nice, you may have the only one up here

what color did you get?

How appropriate! A Rabbit for Purplebunnie!

Be honest, you got it jut because of the name, didn't you 😛

Guilty 😀

Well, mostly. When I started looking, they were Golfs. But when it was time to buy... they were RABBITS again!

It was fate...

2005 yellow VW beetle.

I looove it, but it's been acting up lately. 🙁 I can't afford to take it in right now though, so I'm just planning on running it into the ground. 😀

If I ever have to get another one, it's gonna have to be a V-Dub all the way. 🙂

So I drive a 2006, Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4...gas is making me poor and I'm not even in school yet. I am renting a place that is about 6 miles away from my school which between trips back and forth to let my dog out during lunch make an average day's travel about 24 miles. That's about $7 in gas. I'm seriously considering dropping a few grand on a Vespa to ride back and forth to school....anyone else with me?

1996 VW Golf - hate this car with a passion! The engine's running good, but it needs new everything else: brakes, shocks, front tires (with front-end alignment), headliner, motor for door locks, uhmm.. there's probably something else I'm forgetting that it needs... like a trip to the junk yard!

When my next set of loans come in I'm going to be buying a new used vehicle as it'll end up being cheaper (hopefully), just need to have it checked out before purchase this time!

I drive a bicycle!

...especially since the car engine stopped turning over.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we are in the process of taking out TWO loans for TWO cars because both of them suffered massive casualties... not long after my initial post on this thread. Coincidence? I think not.

Seriously though, this sucks.

1991 Nissan Maxima. 168,000 miles or so. You know, my mom drove me to kindergarten in that car... crazy. It's had a few repairs but nothing over $300. I think my family (parents and then me) have gotten our money's worth outta that car.

Edit: Did I just win the oldest daily driver award?

I have spent over EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS trying to resuscitate this car since this post. Add to that the six hundred on my husband's 1995 Maxima and, well, you can see my frustration. :meanie:

And yes, I know the car is only worth ~2k Blue Book value. I thought it was worth the effort, as it's treated me so well over the last seven years. I was wrong.

If you're comfortable with learning to drive a standard, I'd encourage you to pick up a cheap 250cc full-fledged motorcycle. IMO, Vespas are waaay over-priced for what they are. My Suzuki GZ250 only set me back about $2110 after taxes AND a year of insurance, plus it gets 65-70 MPG. Also, make sure you take a motorcycle training course (www.msf-usa.org).

Do keep in mind that, whatever you do, it will be awhile before you actually break even. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I'll let ya know in more depth what you need to do and consider when getting into motorcycling/scootering.

I drive a bicycle too!

I ran out of money to make my car roadworthy (or roadworthy according to the government here).

1999 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. It has about 76,000 mi. I've had it 9 years and never a problem. I love my truck!

I have to update my last post on this thread. I am now driving an 03 Lincoln Navigator (NOT 50 mpg...see above). Well, at least it fits my
St. Bernard and English Mastiff!

1987 audi quattro! 174k

clear coats half gone, no interior/dash lights, no a/c or heat, doesn't run in the rain, though i did have a pretty (really) nice stereo for about a year before it got jacked. new back passenger window now 😉

Nothing wrong with that! Just got a bike myself, although I haven't given up my car. 😛 Bikes are fun though, especially the fixed gear/single speeds.

but it's still an audi, which means you rule 👍

2001 dark red Mercury Cougar with about 68K miles. I got it as an 18th birthday gift from my Grandma 4 1/2 years ago. It works for me. I'm single with no kids and 1 Boston Terrier. I like it, but my next car will definitely have four doors! Gas mileage isn't the best, but I live about 7 blocks from school so it's not a big deal.

Well, it's official. In less than two weeks I will have a 2006 Honda Civic LX with just over 50k miles. Is it sad that I feel bad for my car? I mean, seventeen years is nothing to sneeze at... 🙁
