What do you guys do to relax in your free time while in med school?

Over the years, I realized that SDNers are pretty insecure type of people—med students generally are; however, we fail to realize that we’re all on the same boat. Enough of negativity. Let’s have some fun. What is life like outside med school?

I watch (don’t have the time to binge watch) early 2000s movies and shows and binge eat Poke bowls and Tuna sandwiches. I like to workout, too. That 30/40 minutes—I don’t think of medicine, at all. What do y’all do?

I am 27 and am too old for that stuff lol.

Starting my own utube channel - will be documenting life in US Med school in my native language.
 
I hung out with friends, often. Hit Plat in League, beat all of Witcher 3 over M1/M2, went to the movies, active on Reddit, indoor track or played outside when it was warm. I'd drive home to spend time with family.

But I also wasn't one of you Zanki Bros/Ortho gunners. As far from it actually. Studied hard leading up to an exam and passed everything, but I'd be lying if I said retention was high.

I took a year off to finish up research and help family out, so weekends have been chill. However, now I have to make up for that time away from studying and grind out a long dedicated in order to do average (0-->231 let's go lol) before heading back.

plat is toxic hell. Constant climb to P1 only to get thrown back into P4

edit: also cite your source for your sig - reading that gave me cancer and I read that before I read the thread it came from. Make sure people know that you did not write that.

Yes, I am totally on board with this! I actually count calories for fun, something might be wrong with me, but I love tracking the numbers. Actually my fun is pretty dang plain. I watch Netflix, work on the vehicles, go hiking. The first two years the only fun I used to have was doing AnKi, Boards and beyond and sketchy.
 
This might be shallow but I'm working on my physique b4 school starts. Cardio, weights, squats, protein shakes, minoxidil for hairline. Receding hairline can destroy a dude's confidence. Prevention is key.

My students seem to love cooking, hitting the gym, running or hiking.

Are there a lot of medical students that partake in le marijuana? Seems like risky biz. I passed my drug test already, but it's like... you never know...
 
During the regular school year, I would go out pretty often with friends for dinner or a social activity like bowling or movies. I felt like I did better when I socialized more vs just staying in and studying 24/7. You really do need the space to decompress and have fun. Makes everything much more enjoyable.

I kept things a bit more tight around board prep time. Still incorporated a little bit of exercise, and basketball here and there, but most of my time was spent studying (10-12 hours a day). I would enjoy a show or two whenever I ate.
 
Workout/run, play basketball and video games, go to concerts, watch netflix, hangout my girlfriend, and go out after exams so I can drink until I forget everything I studied :laugh:
 
I've learned at KCU there is no such thing as free time.

But to answer your question seriously,Netflix and intramural sports.
 
Something physical is a must - I play soccer and play until my legs are sore and bed feels like a cloud...

Other than that, no free time bc free time = boards studying as an OMS2, until you get to dedicated, where I think you actually get more free time bc you don't have to juggle half the days boards studying and the other half class studying.

OMS2 is just that type of year, but hey, it's worth it. We recently had a practice COMSAE at our school and I placed in the top 25% of the class. I know it's a bull**** test whatever, the months and months of never missing a single day of anki reviews across my 4 decks and always doing Rx or UW question in that free time, is paying off and that feels great.

So back to your point, free time in OMS1 vs OMS2 are vastly different.
250's are made in the off-season.
 
I'm an OMS1 so i guess a bit more free time than others lol but netflix/catch up on TV shows I missed, i try and do some sort of volunteering at least twice a month, and I hold a get together with my friends at my place once a month when we have a long weekend where we drink wine and b**ch about life. Oh, and trivia (almost) every wednesday with some friends. definitely go out the evening after an exam so i can forget about it all. bf's a bartender so that certainly helps 😆
