I was wondering what the typical day is like for all of you doing an elective in anesthesia right now. So far i have done two days in my first anesthesia elective. I havent done much and so i wanted to see what it was like for everyone else.

Some programs are really organized and map the day out for you. However, so me are really up to you. I am doing an elective right now and it is really up to you how involved you get. I have found two experiences that have been good so far.

1. Follow a CA1 around who is just learning the ropes. I worked with many of them as interns so we have a good relationship. Some of the things they have learned or are learning will be good things for us to hear and see. Some of them even like to teach to help us, and them to verbalize things. Just don't overburden them with questions during the case, b/c they may still be uncomfortable themselves flying solo. Be attentive to their mood. Problem with CA1 is you may not get to do anything, but you will learn at a more basic level.

2. Follow a CA2 or CA3. They will be more likely to let you do things. Some may disagree with this (they like to hop room to room getting procedures), but I like to stick in one room from start to finish. Learn from set-up, to intubation all the way until the end. Long cases can get boring if you are not doing anything, but a good chance to see what resident life is all about, and a good chance to get to know people. That in my opinion is the best way to get to do things and learn things. Be enthusiastic and stick with one guy for a while, and he may let you do things you wouldn't normally get to do. Spent the afternoon today doing spinals and epidurals up in OB just from doing what I said, and after a couple of hours the resident let me jump in do whatever I wanted.
