I have a few really good friends that are in their third and fourth years at Marquette, so I've gotten some insider info on what the school is really like. It's a new school, with state-of-the-art labs and a relatively progressive cirriculum. That's about all they have going for them.
Their stats are low. 17 AA, 17 PAT for DAT. That's not even average. I know a ton of people who applied as WI residents with some embarrassing DAT scores and they got in. I'm guessing this is what drags the stas down. The common thread among these students was a relative(s) who were alumi. I know of some pretty ridiculous stories about strings being pulled for some people this past fall. The director of admissions told me flat out that his job is to get as many people as possible to apply, even if he knows they don't have a chance in hell. I guess this is assumed, but to have him actually say that to an applicant is in bad taste.
Then you have the whole dental student blog incident. From what my buddies say, the atmosphere among students, staff, and faculty is a bit strange, and there's always drama.
So I guess I would avoid the school. When you have more than half the people you meet from a school tell you they wish another dental school would have given them a shot, that should be a good indication of what student life is like.
But, if you are out of State, smart, motivated, etc., I would consider going there. I can tell you right now that the 40 Wisconsin students, for the most part, won't be a threat to your ranking. Trust me, I know who enters these classes from WI; mostly sons/daughter of alum with below average numbers. In fact, one of the tour guides, a third year from Utah, just got in trouble because he would always tell interviewees that the school is easy because there was little competition. If you think you might want to specialize, consider Marquette.

They do place more emphasis on GPA, however.. I think the average is ~3.5.
Connections do help, as with any private dental school.

And, if you are in-state, WI partially subsidizes tuition, so its a good price.

Dr. Trecek said that it is not really research oriented, so if you are looking to get into that, you would be better of elsewhere.

I'm not really sure what they put emphasis on. The average GPA is around 3.4, and 3.3 science.
Oh yeah, and Trecek isn't a doctor. He's just the DOA.

He's not a doctor. I know the guy outside of his job. He's a shmuck if he said he had a DDS.

thank you guys and if you have any other comments about the school please feel free to tell me.

It is very "high school"-ey..It has the typical private-school-bragging-im-better-than-you thing..VERY cliquey.

A friend of mine goes there for undergrad and he's a douche like that..Even though the grades and test scores at Marquette are less than other schools..very weird..

Are you from WI, PAIN? I agree about the alumni advantage..I go to madison and the people from the UW seem to have decent stats and only a few get accepted. Im just wondering where else these instate people come from, because there really inst that many 'good' schools in WI...

Yeah, I'm from WI. The people I knew from Madison that really had their stuff together weren't too interested in Marquette. Most ended up at Iowa, Minnesota, and the East Coast somewhere.
I took some of my science at UWM last year, and got to know some pre-dents over here (from UWM and Marquette). If they had a relative from Marquette, that's the only place they applied, no exceptions. I know a guy, who's in his fourth year at the Dental School, who applied three years! He didn't apply anywhere else, had very good numbers, and got accepted into the extended program (where you complete one full year at Marquette undergrad, taking upper level science to prove you belong). I don't get that.
I think that if you have a relative that went to the school academics don't matter too much, as long as you can prove your average. Brian says it's so competitive, but then why are the averages so low?
Sorry for being so negative. Somebody jumped down my throat for saying something sbout UOP grads last night (even though it's true). And while we're being negative, I've got a bad feeling about the Bowl game.

anywhere you go there will be an alumni advantage... public school or privite.

so far, i haven't really noticed a wierd atmosphere between the students and faculty at marquette. there are always teachers and students that don't get along, but overall the faculty is very supportive. i like that it isn't a crazy cut-throat atmosphere. i want to be a dentist and have no desire to be first in my class, so it fits my personality.

if you are really thinking about applying - go and visit. each school has its own atmosphere and you have to find the school you feel most comfortable. i really like that we spend a lot of time in clinic (except right before big tests!) and that we get a lot of exposure to different areas very early on. Good Luck!!

Hello,

I graduated from Marquette SOD with a Master of Science in Prosthodontics in 2000 (my specialty) and my impressions are follows:

1. Excellent Restorative Departments!
2. Excellent OMS and Perio professors.
3. Well equiped classrooms ("new" dental school opened in 2001).
4. Tons of holidays!!!

Situated in a LOVING community (Catholic) !!! DP
