I keep hearing about this magical guy at my school who got accepted to 6 DO and podiatry schools with a 2.9 overall gpa and an 18 on the MCAT. Is it wrong for me to think this is completely unnacceptable? From what I understand, there was no upward trend in his gpa. For example, he made a C in genetics the first time, retook it, and made a C again!!! Also, the DO school he is going to has a much higher average accepted numbers range. And he submitted his application in August, so it's not like he applied really early. I'm thinking there must be some long story behind this that no one knows, but it still seems so crazy and really just not fair. I know also that he got a special letter or something from one of the pre-med advisor. I hate this particular advisor because he is incompetent. And no, I'm not jealous. I got into my top choice DO school. I just feel bad for other more qualified people I know who didn't get in anywhere yet. 🙁

It was me!!! And I'm GLAD!! GLAD, I tell you!!! 😀

For the record, it was a 17M, NOT an 18 that I got on the MCAT.





In all seriousness, I would very much doubt that this magical person exists, except in the mind of someone that wants to stir up trouble on SDN and give false hope to the bottom tier of applicants.
 
If this is true... consider that he wasn't just accepted to one school as a fluke. He got into SIX. There's something about him that is more valuable or impressive than poor stats.

Then again, there was a girl from my high school who was accepted to a very selective undergrad as a "minority" because she checked the "hispanic"box. Her mother is half spanish -- read: EUROPEAN spanish. This girl is the most caucasian person I know and had really poor stats (around 1050 SATS I believe?) but was still accepted. Just goes to show that the admissions process is not perfect -- although she did end up doing very well there.

People are def. more than numbers but the applicant described above is terrible in all areas.

The only thing that seperates me from this guy is an exam I took that lasted about 6 hours. Just because of that I should get an acceptance before he does? This is my whole thing with numbers. People are getting mostly A's, never retake a class, take full course loads and bomb the MCAT so now they are no longer an ideal candidate for med school. A 2.9 may be only 1 SD from the mean at some DO schools. I'm just not into numbers I guess.

It is so easy to get into med school... a caveman can do it! 👍

Sorry man, but there are so many other people out there with better grades that this kid just doesn't cut it. A 2.9 and a 18 is unacceptable. I am also one who looks beyond numbers but that is LOW.

Im waitlisted at 2 osteo schools with a 29 MCAT and a masters degree- likely because of late applications...but still an 18 MCAT is pretty stinkin low to have gotten someone an interview at 1 school, let alone accepted to 6.
Perhaps there are other things going on with him...(i.e. gave lots of money, or -dare i say- URM..?)

Numbers aren't everything. But they are a very good indication. This person, if they are smart enough to do well in medical school probably does not have the work ethic based on there undergrad gpa. I know non-science majors who took the mcat cold and got higher than an 18. I'm not a numbers person and i think the mcat is crap, but a low mcat and low gpa shows that they have no work ethic to me, or just aren't intelligent enough to do well. There is nothing wrong with not being intelligent, but you must hit a point where u need to think about a new career. This person may load themselves with debt, and not be able to pass the boards.

They could have all the passion in the world, and the best ecs, but if u can't learn the material, patients suffer. You can't remove a gall bladder with passion alone.

For every one person that is underqualifed that gets in, there is one qualified person that won't get in.
 
I agree that there are circumstances that may cause a low number, but an overall GPA and an MCAT bomb like those indicate laziness to me more than anything. There are plenty of people working hard with good character who deserve to go to med school, and of course there are a few with good character who have triumphed over some hardships and have somewhat lower numbers but come on... My dean asked us in orientation to raise our hands if we have ever faced some hardship; of course everyone raised their hands. The dean then said congratualtions, everyone faces hardships but those that are able to handle them and trumph are the ones that make it here. Pre-med is more about persistence, hard work, and dedication than intelligence. Lord knows, you will need all of those qualities to be successful here so I would declare the process a success.
I will keep my faith in this is a rumor with no basis to it.
 
Ok, he's definitely a real person. I confirmed it with a friend of his today, and I found his facebook. He is on the waterski team. I didn't even know baylor had a water ski team. So maybe we should have all joined a really random sports team in college. Also, he is not a URM.

And I know that numbers aren't everything. I just really want to know what made this guy special since I have so many friends who deserved to get in more in my opinion at least.

As rejection letters say, there are a lot of qualified applicants, but a limited number of seats. Its a pity though.

As countless rejection letters say, "there are many qualified applicants, but a limited number of seats." Its a true pity. As to the rumor, if it is true, congrats to the applicant who got in despite below average scores, if it is not true, shame on the person who started the rumor.

Maybe this guy/girl was Jesus in ecs. Anyways, it proves a point that I have been stressing since coming onto SDN: your numbers are only as high as YOU sell them. Who really follows rumors anyways? I guess that is why soap operas are so damn popular.
