I just started at Palmetto. I am happy I'm here. I'm VERY impressed with the faculty here. The facilities are amazing. The pay and benefits are as good as you'll get. You do some big cases here. Most residents placed around 20 implants last year, with one guy doing over 30. Good blend of hospital exposure, surgical experience, and advanced clinical dentistry.

Here's all I know about the others:

Alabama - Don't know much, but I've heard it's a good program. I've talked with a guy who trained some years ago with the Program Director there and spoke very highly of him.
MCG - I've heard it's good, as well. That's it.
MAHEC - New, but I've heard it should be good. Asheville would be cool.
Fayetteville - I don't know much about it. But I've heard the big implant guy is leaving.
Palmetto - the best one out there. 😉
San Antonio VA - Awesome program and very competitive. I've heard the program director is kind of a unique guy.

I know that doesn't do much for you. I'll let you know more about Palmetto as we get further along in the program. You might look into Jacksonville and St. Petersburg. I interviewed at both as was very impressed. I don't know what it is, but I literally looked at programs all over the country...the very strong programs seem to be in the Southeast.

Anyway, good luck!

Hey Buckeye- Thanks for the info-
Based on internet research so far Palmetto is one of my top choices, so definitely keep me posted.

I have looked into St Pete but decided not to apply - based on the info on thier website they have ALOT of extra rotations (plastics, ENT, orthopedic surg... the list goes on) and even though they have 3 residents there are only 2 operatories. Maybe I just jumping to conclusions but if i am going to participate in a program I want to spend more time doing dentistry.

If you don't mind- when did you submit your apps, did feel like you were a competitive applicant ( I know palmetto says they only consider you if you are in the top 50% and have an 85 on part one and I am borderline but I do have a decent CV).
Thanks

Well that is my list above- I am looking at adding another program possibly Providence RI, Jacksonville, or Hartford CT.

I know that a few of the programs are more competitive than others - Palmetto is suppose to be comp so is San Antonio (even though the director says that he doesn't make selections based on grades/boards...)

Do you have access to ASDA's guide to GPR/AEGD programs- its $35 on the web and it has stats as to ratio of applications to accepted students

Let me know how things go for you- I should be submitting my apps next week.

I think you're talking about a different St. Pete than where I went...the UF AEGD. They take 8 residents and I don't remember there being all those rotations.

I didn't apply super early, but I think it would be best if you did. I applied late August, early September. I think my earliest deadlines were October 1. I felt I was a very competitive applicant. At the risk of sounding totally conceited, I thought I would get in wherever I applied! It was humbling...but good for me. I'm very happy I ended up where I am.

The bottom line is this...don't waste your time trying to guess if you'll get into a certain program. Apply where you would like to be.
Good luck!

Wow Buckeye- Thanks for bringing that florida thing to my attention. I had been looking at the program associated with the VA in St. Pete not the one through UF.
You wouldn't have happened to look at any of the programs in OHIO?

I've heard the VA in Cleveland is good. I've heard Miami Valley in Dayton is OK. I've heard the VA in Dayton is no good. I wasn't a huge fan of the program at OSU (I didn't apply there). Those are the only ones I know anything about.
