I have a bet with this dumb friend of mine. I was saying if I get a 36 on the MCAT I will definitely get into Emory and he was like, "No way dude, Emory is hard as hell to get into." So I bet him $50 that a 36 on the MCAT will get into Emory and the idiot took me up on that bet. He's so stupid because a 36 is like good enough to get into Harvard and Emory isn't close to Harvard. I just want to make sure I made a good bet. What do you think?

What are your other stats?

You can win this bet easily. Just look up the stats of some students who got into emory. I gaurentee someone got in with a 36 or below. Not to mention their website says they average 10'2 and 11's, so that would be a 33 average right?

There are no "guarantee stats". All your 36 (if you get it) means is that the adcom definitely won't wipe their asses with your app. If your essay sucks, or your gpa is low, or you're competing for a spot against someone with a more interesting life story, or you blow your interview, you could very well be dinged, even with a higher score than 36.

People with 36's and lower get in, but people with above 36 get rejected. Remember, GPA, personal statement, recommendations, extracurriculars, research, and interview all factor in.

I got a 40 and got rejected by Vanderbilt without an interview, and I'm by no means counting on admission to Emory.

It probably has to do with: "years 3 and 4 are solid I's that turned into F's." :scared:

Maybe so, but it shows my point that a high MCAT doesn't suffice and that schools vary a lot in what they're looking for. (Pitt and Vandy have identical rankings, Pitt gave me an automatic interview, Vandy rejected me out of hand.) Actually, I think it has more to do with my lack of research, since Vandy's all about that.

You are forgetting the interview. Emory does have one of the most difficult interviews of all medical schools since its 3 students competing with one another in front of 3 people on the admission officers

I had my Emory interview on their first day, 10/1...
Just wanted to dispel any rumors about the group interview or Emory interview in general. First of all, I got a 31 and got an interview there the first day. Secondly, they stress how relaxing the interviews are, and they live up to it. The medical student who tours you around is one of the three people interviewing you during the group interview, and there is absolutely no competition at all. It is an extremely friendly environment, and each person is asked individual questions regarding their own personal statement during the group interview. The individual interview is nothing more than a conversation with a faculty member.
So could you get into Emory with a 36? Sure.
Do a lot of other things factor into your admission other than MCATs? Yes.

Hope that helps.

So where were you granted interviews at, or have you already been accepted?

Wow, "dude", I hope you grow up in the next 4-5 years before they let you have free reign to kill people.

Gotta love the mentality of some people. 😱

I got a reject from Vandy, as well. With a 3.72 gpa from a Vandy feeder school and a 35 on the MCAT. Granted, it's not a 36, but it ain't bad. There are a lot of variables at play, though. I didn't have any research experience, was a humanities major, and hadn't had a science course in several years. My science gpa was only around a 3.5.

My guess is one point on the MCAT wouldn't have kept me from getting a rejection, even with what appear to be overall high numbers.

Oh, give me a break. Someone's character is not wholly determined by one stupid joke or bet or anything, really. You're the one who should grow up: it's an awfully long way down when you fall off a high horse.

Speaking of Emory, I just checked my email and got an interview invite from them. I have a 3.9 gpa and a 35 on the MCAT.

A 36 is a very good score, and it is good enough for anywhere, but it doesn't gaurantee you anything. There are too many other factors to take into consideration, luck being one of them, and although a 36 is good, even if you were 99th percentile, as impressive as that sounds, that means you are one in a hundred and with a couple thousand people applying you are not as rare as you think. Also, it is clear they let a lot of people in with lower numbers anyway, so lots of people with good numbers get thrown out.

Also don't think that a certain score with get you an interview invite at a school of a certain rank. I got invited to interview at Duke but U Chicago rejected me like a month ago. Duke technically outranks UC (not that rankings necessarily mean anything), but the "lower ranked" school wasnt very much impressed by me apparently.

I guess I didn't see the joke in it as much as I saw the arrogance mixed with poor speaking ability. It did amuse me, though.

A 36? haha! Don't waste your time applying if get anything below a 37.

🙄

you do realize if your scores and apps are TOO good, you might not get in because the school feels you will not go there anyway and have better options.

May I suggest to all readers of these forums to take post counts into consideration when attempting to interpret a post? Willthatsall is a 1000+ poster. Which suggests that this might be a joke post. Now, granted, it might have been made more clearly a joke. Or at least funnier. But nobody arrives at 1000 posts without having seen like a gazillion posts similar to this one.

I thought about that, but most of those posts seem to have been in the MCAT forum, so who knows.

Ahhh, check that out. Being new 'round these parts I'm learning all sorts of interesting things.

On a related "newcomer" note, I hear speak of "The Lounge" but haven't been able to find it. Can someone direct me? I'm dying for a good cocktail party. Just love those finger foods.

Actually, I believe you have to hit 50 (?) posts before gaining access to the Lounge. Or, donate some money.

Emory is definitely not one of the most difficult interviews. I really enjoyed the panel interview. The other two applicants were really nice also.

In addition, a 36 will not get you an automatic acceptance. Also fyi, some of the admissions people there read these boards.

if your friend is an idiot like you say he is, you will probably lose the bet

This is without any doubt the best line I have ever seen in any forum (no sarcasm).
