Hi! I was recently accepted into NYU for spring transfer(undergrad), I was just hoping to get some thoughts on the school from people attending or who have attended. It is very expensive and give trash financial aid ( I was only awarded 6k scholarship money for spring semester ).

Any advice really would help..

Thanks everyone!

Clam chowder is my favorite soup. Now to your question, do you think that it is a good idea to take on major debt for undergrad before taking on huge additional debt for med school? Unless Daddy has the bucks, forget it. Bad idea.

Use your head, son.

Yea daddy doesnt have the bux. You make a good point, and almost for the sake of arguing I plan to have my debt paid off by working in an under served area ( for each year of medical school the gov't pays for you have to work anywhere in the country they want that need doctors, mostly in the middle of nowhere like New Madrid Missouri for example.)

i don't recommend NYU. basically, they say to you in orientation, "you may well not make any friends in your four years here." there is no real campus so you really have to make an effort to socialize. why do you think there are so many suicides there? there is a blatant lack of community. you might as well go to Hunter or Baruch or another CUNY that will cost a fraction of NYU's tuition.

DO NOT GO HERE. For anonymity's sake, I am currently finishing my undergrad degree in a science here. The teachers are terrible, and couldn't care less if you fail their classes or not. In fact, one of my teachers may or may not have a mental disorder.
I am doing pretty decent, but the amount of effort I have put in simply does not match with the amount I have gotten back. I have a friend that transferred here from Penn state with a 3.9 GPA, and he is now failing the same courses that I'm taking here.

I'm not the only one that says it, pretty much all I hear is my premed friends complaining about how much they hate NYU undergrad. Save yourself your sanity and don't go here.

wow is nyu really that bad ? i was planning to maybe transfer there

there's 20k NYU undergrads. there's a few on SDN. I had a great time at NYU (but no school is worth paying that much for, imo) and I didn't find out about SDN til I graduated. You really have to enjoy the city and be an independent person to like it there.

It's not for everyone.

my friend wanted to get into nyu..
and got accepted
but she wont go because she knows its way too over-priced and no merit based scholarships which mean that you'll be forced to pay 50k a year.. most people will end up with more debt in there undergrad then they will from med school..
its not worth it..
good schools with a good name is only worth going to if you need to get a degree for a job..

actually went to nyu and transferred out - imo it isn't worth the huge price tag especially with the crappy financial aid. i kind of regret not applying to columbia instead.

no formal campus so it might be hard to meet people plus it's easy to get lost in the shuffle. at the same time, i know there are plenty of people who enjoyed their time there.

I assume you go to UC Berkeley from your avatar. Why would you want to transfer to NYU when you go to one of the best public schools in the country? Not to mention that the bay-area is a great place.

Yea I mean I had fun my first year, when I didn't care about doing well in premed.

But once my premed classes started, the pain began. If your a premed here, this place is hell on earth; all you do is study....no joke. The teachers make it IMPOSSIBLE to get solid A's; most end up with B-'s in our classes, if not lower grades. Competition is pretty high between premeds, which just isn't a "fun" environment to be in.

Your life, but as someone that is here currently, I urge you to reconsider.

This should be moved to the High School section.

IF you have any case of depression, social anxiety, or whatever, you may also want to reconsider the school.
