Hey guys,

Last April, I took the MCAT, a few days after discovering a serious situation in my family. I knew I was distracted at the time, but I was floored when i got a 21. I spent the next few months bustin my ass...and only got a 29 on last August's MCAT. So I took the mcat twice, still ending up with a sub-30 score. I have a 3.55 gpa, 3.4 sci - from a top 10 school. (south asian- not a urm!)

I'm a senior now, taking next year off to work and do research in Mexico. (spanish and bio major, great EC's including physician interepreter)- I plan on applying this summer.

I want to be very realistic. But, I want to pursue medicine more than anything. Do you think I have a shot at getting in for 2005? What can I do at this point to help my chances and my application for this June?

Thanks so much- I can't stop thinking about this...

I dont see why you don't have a shot. I got in with a low MCAT and it was LOWER than yours. Plus your overall GPA is just about average for a lot of schools (unless you plan to go for top 20). Your science GPA might be a little low but the overall application looks good....fairly good MCAT, average GPA, great EC's !! If you decide wisely where to apply to you absolutely have a shot. I know at least 4 people who got in with much lower MCAT scores than you including myself their first try. They look at the whole person not just the sum of your scores. Just be confident and go for it.

i want to know how low these scores were

thanks disenchanted -- What do you mean by applying to the right schools? I'm a MA resident... How should I go about choosing schools?

I think you have a 99% chance of getting in at least *somewhere*. Just be realistic about it... unfortunately "great EC's" do not compensate for a lower GPA or MCAT at the best schools. Just don't get too wrapped up in Harvard pipe dreams and you'll be fine... I certainly wouldn't discount you at UMass (good school), maybe Tufts, as far as MA schools. Congrats on the improvement in your MCAT!

I think you have a pretty decent shot. Plenty of people with lower scores than that get in. I wouldn't call a 29 "low" by any means. It's above the average for a bunch of schools. Make sure you apply to enough schools.

You may not get to pick and choose too much, but you have a very good chance of getting in somewhere.

And have a nice answer waiting when asked at interviews how you made such a dramatic MCAT improvement. It really is something to be proud of. 🙂
