I just recently graduated with a BS in biology but because of the economy and family situations I have decided to work for a few years before going to medical school. I was wondering if being a surgical technician is view as a good or poor thing to medical school admins? Please let me know your insight?

my stats are: mcats: 36, GPA:3.0

Sounds like a good job before med school. The gpa is kind of low though, you might want to bring it up. And make sure to apply before that MCAT expires.

I agree with the above post. Being a surgical technician gives you valuable experiences and interactions with physicians. It is also good to mention the GPA. It is a little low for allopathic schools. Are you interested in D.O. as well? A few things to consider while you are taking this time off. Since you already have an MCAT score, they do expire after three years, so I hope you are planning on applying within that time. Also, if you want to go allopathic, you can also consider going into a one year masters program to raise that. But again, if money is an issue, masters may not be an option, but the GPA is a little low. MCAT score is really competitive, GPA isn't...

Good luck!

I agree with the above posts. Oh, and it is MCAT not MCATS (damn that "Meet the Parents" movie!)

The GPA may not kill you if it is due to a really bad first year (followed by a significant upward trend). Still, it is risky to apply with such a low GPA.

You may also want to consider pathology tech. Not as competitive as surgery tech and you get to do a lot! Our path techs pretty much do the whole autopsy, the residents stand back and let them at it. You have to have a strong constitution though, not be afraid of poop and blood.

Good luck.

If you want to be a MD, then I would work on raising my GPA while off. Any clinical work with patients is good. Clinical volunteering and shadowing is a must to do as well.

Lastly, dont waste that great MCAT.....it takes more than that to get accepted.
