So I'm sitting at the end of the semester of my technically sophomore year with a megacrap gpa of a 2.33. This semester I'll be pulling a 3.6 and I'm not sure what to do in the sense of what are my chances of even getting into any MD school.

I really have no real reason to explain my crap gpa other than laziness and a lack of maturity after graduating from high school. I was still thinking that life was still a game and I had loads of time to really figure it all out.

If I finish my last two years with a 3.7+ and raise my gpa to a 3.2 would I even look like a valid candidate? Granted I have great ECs and LORs, would this extreme low gpa completely drop me from the runnings?

I feel like I'm fixing this relatively early but who knows...I'm no expert 😕

Go the DO route and use their grade replacement system

Unfortunately, a 3.2 GPA will be screened out from most MD schools and probably won't be looked at by ADCOM. That does not mean that you don't have a chance. All it means is that you're going to have to some how justify your first 2 years of lack luster academic performance. It also means that you're going to have to outperform other dimensions of your application in such an extreme manner that you catch someones eye. This could as previously stated be an excellent personal statement or secondary with some form of explanation or life experience that shaped your academic career. However, as you stated you don't really have a proper "explanation" so this option is out of the question. Some people tend to indicate sickness, military service/deployment, loss of loved one, traumatizing moments etc. as a brief but concise explanation. Even though lack of maturity is understandable, it's just not good enough in extreme cases where half of your undergrad has been demolished by poor performance. Lack of maturity is sometimes evident for poor performance and may be excused for poor performance in 1-2 semesters.
Now here's your actual solution as the previous poster listed you should be open to DO (Osteopathic medical schools) and most importantly take advantage of their grade replacement policy which is not available with AMCAS. If you wish to only pursue the MD route then you should take an extra year in undergrad or pursue a SMP after performing outstandingly well in the last 2 years. You need to some how bring your cGPA and sGPA as close to as a 3.4 as possible. You should aim and definitely score > 32 on the MCAT and have strong ECs, LORs and well written primary/secondary applications.
Your ECs should consist of leadership, clinical experience (preferably 2 years) and non clinical experience (preferably 2 years). Shadowing and volunteering should be with a primary care physician and some other specialists. You should also apply broadly and early. Have your transcripts sent in by May, have your LORs submitted by June, primary submitted in June, secondaries completed preferably no later than mid-July. If you follow through with this plan I definitely see you getting accepted to a MD school. If you apply with a 3.2 then it's just going to be a crap shoot and possibly a waste of time simply because immaturity can not justify 2 years of piss poor academic performance.

I would interpret this post tht you only have one year of poor academic performance, with a good GPA for the first semester of sophomore year, is that correct? Some med schools give less weight to freshman year grades, as it is common for it to take awhile to get one's new study strategies firmed up.

While I may be making incorrect assumptions, as you seem to be on the right path now, I calculate that with 5 more semesters of 3.7, you'd be at a cGPA of 3.33, but if you get a 4.0 from now on, your GPA after the 8th semester would be 3.53. If you do a fifth year continuing at 4.0, it could rise to 3.6+. With an appropriate MCAT score, you could be in good shape for an MD acceptance without an SMP. So aim higher.

You are fine as long as you stay on top of your work and ace your courses. You already started a very strong upward trend. Just don't slack off anymore!
