What do you wish you knew on Day 1 of internship?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any advice for those about to begin tomorrow? What do you wish you knew then that you know now?

Being organized and efficient is being the best that you can be as an intern. The year flies by quickly so learn all that you can.

your life is not your own for this year
do what you are told dont complain
everything is a learning experience
watch everything you can (see one ... do one ...)
asks questions
you are never alone, always call in the calvalry even when you feel comfortable
work hard, dont be lazy, be on time
make your seniors/cheifs look good, they will pass on this appreciation to you indirectly in the form of cases and call scheduling

i could keep going

The most important thing you can do is memorize a lot of cliche one-liners, and that way.....down the line.....when you are super-duper experienced, you can pass them on to the underlings in an authoritative manner.

It is also extremely important that you use an accusatory tone, where you are implying that the new resident or student would definitely have done the forbidden thing if you hadn't warned them.

I'll get you started:

Never be late!!

Be nice to nurses, or they'll make your life hell!! (you have to imagine me pointing my finger at you angrily as I tell you this.)

Don't complain!! (wait, someone already said that one)

etc. etc.

I hope this helps!👍
