So I was asked by my PCP to see a hematologist, and although not very frightening, just the thought of the whole situation scared the crap out of me...mostly because most Heme's are also Oncologist.

So if your PCP (or whatever) told you to see a specialist, which specialist would you be most afraid of seeing? Mine would definitely be the oncologist. If I had to see an Oncologist I'd be petrified.:scared:

Haha

I immediately thought oncologist too. That goes for any of my friends and family too.

Psych. I AM NOT CRAZY!

But serioously, urology. Or the dude that does colonoscopy. You better keep that stuff away from my rear end!

Lol obviously an oncologist... stupid question haha

i'll be honest.. im not fond of needles.. so any field which requires a needle be stuck into me sucks. However if we're speaking doctors as a wide spectrum( all doctoral degree holders) then the one i fear the most are dentists/oral surgeons 🙁 all the procedures are done with you wide awake and gagging.. uggh.

I think neurosurgeon or neurologist come pretty damn close. lol

I was just going to say that. While I want nothing more in life than to become a neurosurgeon, I'd be scared to death if I ever needed to enlist their services for my own brain or spine.

Yeah any type of surgery is scary as **** ... the only reason I said oncologist is because cancer obviously kills and slowly. Plus that visit could eventually lead to surgery, chemo etc. So its more 'encompassing'

Just reading the thread title automatically thought Oncologist. Neurosurgeon wouldn't exactly be thrilling either.

i was referred to a GI and i was scared because i didn't want a colonoscopy. luckily i dodged that bullet.

i heard they aren't that bad.. your drugged and you just feel a bit bloated afterwords.. If it was done conscious.. it'd be really cold..

whomever does abortions and or gives birth (i know i should know this)
me = dude

I think getting a jellyfinger prostate exam will be the most nervous I'll ever be going to the doctor. When the moment comes I've always thought I'd pretend to be really excited about, and slap my cheeks before spreading them goatse-style and saying to the doctor "open for business!". But I'll probably chicken out

hahaha it wud be really awkward if u moaned with pleasure just to make the doctor feel really uncomfortable hahahaha

I'd rather go to a PCP than my routine dentist cleaning too!

You could just (I know, "just") have a slipped disk, but those surgeries are very routine for neurosurgeons.

Orthopaedic surgeons do that type of thing too, but yeah, you're right. Transplant surgeons (kidney, pancreas, heart, etc) are also people I'd love to meet in a professional setting but hate to meet as patients of theirs.

yeah but you have to spend like 2 days on the toilet before you go in lol

You sir, are my hero just for thinking of that.

Been to and had surgery done by both a neurosurgeon and orthopedic surgeon. Also have seen an endocrinologist. None of them were bad.

I would hate to have to see a nephrologist. Bad kidneys mess up a lot of stuff.

haha its not that bad.. had to do it.😱 You start the day before... and u pretty much dont sleep that night...not coz your in the bathroom, but because ur intestines are constantly spasming and the pain sucks... but after a few hours ur good, and the procedure is painless... the worst part was the nurse sticking my iv...she missed twice and "went thru the vein" the next time? wtf?

I also shadowed a GI...its so routine for them, they make it seem so effortless... i was shocked at how good they are at what they do..👍

The woman gives birth, the OB catches. 😉

That would be quite the odd referral for a man to get. "Well, Jim, it appears you have ovaries. Let me get you the number for the women's health group down the hall, I want you to pay them a visit."

And to answer the question, Oncology wins hands down.

DEFINITLEY ONCOGLOY. I GUESS THAT RULES OUT ONE FIELD I WILL PRACTICE IN. I DONT WANT ALL MY PATIENTS TO BE TRAUMATIZED BEFOR ETHEY EVEN SEE ME.

yeah oncolgly... omg i cant spell im too tired

Oncology for me too. Neurosurgery definitely up there. Interestingly enough, I want to go into oncology.

Actually, I would be really scared to go to a psychiatrist. When you try to convince people you're not crazy and you're genuinely not crazy, they believe you're even crazier. I guess the same applies to depression. No thanks, I can evaluate myself.

Intensivist (Critical Care)

If one of them is seeing you, you will most likely have

1. Usually invasive monitoring (A-lines)
2. Central Lines +/- swans
3. foley
4. Zassi (rectal tube)
5. Possible ET tube attach to a vent
6. NG/NJ tube for feeds
7. More meds than you can count
8. At least 2 broad spectrum antibiotics on board
9. Possible chest tube(s)
10. Possible dialysis (via a BIG dialysis catheter)
11. Drugged to keep you sedated and pain free

A lot of MICU patients are also oncology patients

Basically you have a tube in every orifices, and tubes in newly created artificial orifices, drugged and sedated, on tube feeds or TPN, with multiple IV pumps in the room, and constant beeping from all the equipments in the room

There are so many pre-meds that are afraid/opposed to needles. Sometimes I feel it's almost all of them.

There's nothing wrong with it, I just find it odd that the people who will ultimately be responsible for much needle-poking and prodding are often scared of needles themselves.

Which would I be most afraid to see?

If I'm seeing my anesthesiologist during surgery, someone's not doing his/her job

Psychiatrist (or neurologist)

If you're seeing a psychiatrist (or neurologist if there's a brain issue. Psych and neuro isn't that far apart in reality), there's a good chance that a part of the very essence of your being is messed up. I'd rather die than end up in some lock down psych facility. At least death is final. Yes, there are psych disorders that can be managed, but even those can be hit or miss and one or two missed doses can cause some serious trouble. Catastropic psychatric diseases, on the other hand, can result in you looking out a window and slowly watch your life drift away. Worse off, if you're out of the hospital, there's a possibility that you won't be able to find anything but the lowest of the low of jobs for a variety of reasons. I feel bad for psych patients like these. They're either in essentially a medical prison or their tossed out into society with minimal prospects.

aw dang it, this one's more clever...

I feel as if theres a certain socialization of our environment to dislike things piercing our skin.. like needles and bullets and large pieces of wood lol.
But yes, most pre-meds are afraid of needles and probably get quizy when they see organs.. i know sure as hell when i did a disection of a pig in AP bio. I dont know if it was the stench of the chemical preservative or maybe it was the sheer mental load( more likely the mental aspect) but i felt nauseous for the whole first day.The next day i was perfectly fine haha... so more or less these things we grow out of very quickly.

Urologist for a prostate exam.

Unless of course she's hot and promises to use lots of lube and only two fingers.

I'm really afraid of getting Alzheimer's, in different ways than getting cancer. Everything you've ever known just slips away and you don't know who you are anymore. Very sad stuff.

Korsakoff psychosis is worse to think about. Thankfully, those that have it can't remember that they have it (it's the inability to form new long term memories. In other words, you don't know what happened 5 minutes ago).

I know what you mean. It's very sad and kind of scary.

I think neurologist wins for me. Neurologists usually deal with chronic conditions or degenerative ones...sad stuff (like above). Besides medications and some PT, there's not a lot that can be done for some neurologic conditions...cancer is scary ish too though...
