Hi all,

To any Canadians on here who have experience with UB, I was wondering if you could provide me with some insight on what the expectations are like for Canadian students seeking admission to UB - generally how many they take, cGPA and bcp GPA, DAT, any thing in particular they like or look for... what you can do to stand out / increase your chances

If you received an interview/acceptance, what were your stats like?

Any experience, tips and advice (from Canadian or U.S. students) is greatly appreciated as I've been working toward Buffalo for a couple years now

Thanks!

P.s. I graduated last June, completing 5th year at uni, as of now my stats are:
cGPA ~3.55-6, science GPA ~3.50, bcp GPA ~3.30, non-sci ~3.9
DAT: Bio 20, Chem 20, Orgo 20, PAT 20, Reading 25, QR 15, TS 20, AA 20 [most likely re-taking in May]

Considering they are a NY state school, I think generally they will take instate applicants first, and I believe its very competitive to get in because tuition is very reasonable.

Look up individual schools you're interested in and look at their international applicants. Contact admissions directly to see what your chances are.

Yes, I contacted admission when I had a cgpa ~3.43, sci 3.4 and bcp 2.7-9 and applied and was told my DAT scores were very competitive but gpa and bcp are under their average which is 3.5. I was told to increase my scores by taking upper level bio or masters. I was also told volunteer work or research in dental atmosphere is helpful (which I have)... not sure if the woman took note that I am international.

Regardless, this seems to be the common response - post-bacc or masters... so I was just wondering if anyone had personal experiences to share.

Thanks

As a side note - do you guys think I should enroll in a 1 year masters in the U.S. for this upcoming year (apply to dental school in June 2012 and start masters)... it's a difficult decision, not sure if my current stats will suffice for any U.S. school.

I know a canadian SDN member who got into UB, with 3.5 GPAs this year but he is finishing up his thesis based masters in a few months. He had a DAT score of 19/19. I AM positive you will make it this year with your improved GPA. Why are you worried so much 🙂 relax

Buffalo is extremely difficult to get into. Even for NY residents and especially for non NY applicants. You have good stats and don't need to retake the DAT in my opinion. I think if you apply to more Canadian friendly schools in the US, you'll land at least one acceptance somewhere. Good luck

what does a nys resident have to do to get into buffalo is a better question

I'm female 😉 haha but yes, my DAT scores were kinda crappy, but my master's helped a lot. I had 6 years of grades to report and the last 4 were 4.0, first two years being 2.8-3.0. so you can do it...at my interview they said i did the right thing by doing a masters and not just taking courses - something to think about...good luck!

Make yourself a competitive dental school applicant (aka GPA 3.5+ DAT 20+). Obviously there are people that deviate from those numbers. NYS residents do get some "bonus points" according to the ADCOM. I think they're really big on community service, the program has a lot of outreach opportunities domestically and abroad (I had 5000+ hours of community service and worked as a volunteer coordinator for a year). I had a good research background as well, but wasn't asked a single question about research, and my interviewer was actually a researcher and not a care provider. I also got the vibe they are very "family-oriented", which means they like applicants that are willing to help other students, have a sense of humor, etc..

Yes, I have contacted the school again recently... and it does seem they prefer and look highly upon Masters degrees... which would help significantly more than just taking courses... which is what I did this year, I should have started my masters in Sept instead of a 5th undergrad year! 🙁

I was basically told it is very competitive for Canadians and they look for a very strong academic background, I asked if I should do a Masters on top of the 5th year and was told so, and pretty much told my current stats are not enough really :'(

Why are you so insistant on UB? There are a number of schools that have no qualms with accepting Canadians. It's just that, yes, they all have outrageous tuition, even the state schools. For example, I was accepted to UMN, but attending would've cost me $84000 a year. That's pricier than pretty much all private schools (except places like UOP, UPenn and USC).

Don't do a thesis masters if you hate research - you wil hate your life for 2+ years. on the other hand, if you think you might like it, it can be a ton of fun..make sure you know what your getting into if you decide to go that route! personally I found it to open a lot of doors for me dental school wise..so if UB is your ultimate goal you know that to do to get there.
