for allopathic schools this is the honors society
for DO schools the AOA:
The AOA is a member association representing more than 56,000 osteopathic physicians (D.O.s). The AOA serves as the primary certifying body for D.O.s, and is the accrediting agency for all osteopathic medical colleges and health care facilities.
The AOA's mission is to advance the philosophy and practice of osteopathic medicine by promoting excellence in education, research, and the delivery of quality, cost-effective healthcare within a distinct, unified profession.
in a number of threads especially the residency forums they talk about being AOA (honors society) which helps in making your residency app stand out. This is the allopathic honors society they are talking about though.

Also, when making a decision about how you will participate in organized medicine, don't forget that full membership in the AMA is open to DOs. You may want to compare the lobbying activities, budgets, and goals of the two organizations as well. Here, more DOs (a lot more) are represented by the AMA than the AOA.
As a student member of the AMA, you will not only receive JAMA, but you may have the opportunity (even as a DO) to get involved with your state medical society, interact with the greatest number of practicing physicians possible, and build important contacts for your future career.
If you want to be an OMT specialist, you may even consider joining both organizations. The important thing is to join and become active so that you have a vote and a voice in issues that affect your future.

Old Mil,
Thank you for your reply. I was recently accepted to DMU, and am very interested in attending. How do you like it so far? I have researched the strengths of DMU, but what are some of the weaknesses you have noticed?
I was just wondering, as I will have to make a decision soon.
Thanks in advance.

I know what American Osteopathic Association is. I just have never heard the term "going AOA," which obviously means being accepted to the allo honors society.
