What does it mean by 1yr internship incomparision to residency

Hey, i was going through FSMB website and i came across Virgin islands.

It said that, to practice in Virgin Islands the candidate should complete 1yr Internship at hospital accredited by AMA. What does this 1 yr internship mean. Are they referring it to a transitional year?

and how hard is it to get in this type of internship and how to get in. I did a google search but no help so far. I will really appreciate any help.

There are many many transitional year and preliminary medicine and preliminary surgery internships available through the match all over the place.
