What does it mean if you get wait-listed during early decision?

Just got waitlisted. Does this mean I am free to apply to other programs during the regular admissions cycle? I thought ED was a binary thing where either you were accepted or you were rejected. Thanks guys.

Really good question. Can you contact the school or PTCAS to find out where this leaves you? Did they move you to the regular pool and waitlist you? That seems possible, but I would contact them to make sure.

PTCAS states this:
Program Decisions
PTCAS institutions are required to make admission decisions on Early Decision candidates no later than September 25, 2017. The program will choose to accept or deny an applicant, or move an Early Decision application to regular status. Applicants who are denied or moved to the regular pool will be permitted to apply to additional programs for an additional fee by September 26.


That led me to think the same as you, that it was a binary decision made by 9/25.

I also applied early decision, but don't expect to hear back until the Sept deadline.

I thought it was either accepted or moved to regular decision. To be waitlisted seems to suggest that they filled their slots with ED candidates. You could always try adding a program in your application but it sounds like you'll have to call PTCAS.

This is what is listed in PTCAS instructions:

PTCAS institutions are required to make admission decisions on Early Decision candidates no later than September 25, 2017. The program will choose to accept or deny an applicant, or move an Early Decision application to regular status. Applicants who are denied or moved to the regular pool will be permitted to apply to additional programs for an additional fee by September 26.

It is possible that programs participating in the PTCAS Early Decision process will fill their next entering class with Early Decision applicants before their regular deadline date passes. If so, the program might consider applicants in the regular pool for wait-list positions only.

Called PTCAS, they said they hadn't heard of this before, but that I should be able to apply to other programs. I'm still unclear about when I can apply to other programs though. Do I have to wait til the end of September or can I apply now since I already have the verdict about my ED application?

You should be able to apply now. What does your application status say on PTCAS?

It just says "verified." It won't let me select other programs do apply to.
