I've seen lots of posts talking about research people have done and they something like, "they have "X" publication, "Y" number of posters, and "Z" number of abstracts. My question is, what are the abstracts?

I know some conferences publish the abstracts from the presentations. Is it just those? Or, is it abstracts that you contributed to that were submitted for presentation, but that you didn't present? Or, is it something else that I'm not aware of?

Imo this is what people mean by abstracts. They are less important than presentations made by you but they are still productivity and can be listed in CVs. Although people usually combine Presentations and Abstracts into a single category.

Exactly - things submitted to a conference. It’s basically one wrung above “project in progress” on the ol CV. Just means you got to a point you thought you had something to present. Generally the first step in the path of publication, though sometimes people skip it and just submit a full manuscript to a peer reviewed journal.
