what does it take to become an oral surgeon?

hi guys,
i know that one of the biggest things that schools look at for OMFS interviews is Part 1 national board score marks.
could the oral surgery residents here please give further insight into what board scores are needed, and what the weeding point is...

i know that over 90% is definitely preferred.
but in terms of over 90, is there a higher cut off for interviews, and once invited for an interview, do the board scores make any difference?

Part I and Part II boards scores (the cut-off depends on how good the applicant pool is applying to a program. Some programs are more desirable than others), dental school GPA, research papers and/or presentations, extra-curricular activites, under-graduate GPA and letters of recommendation are all important. Once you receive an invitation to interview at a program, it pretty much becomes a level playing field. They then decide, based on your personality and interviewing skills, who they think best fits into their program.

How much of a factor is undergrad gpa?

I sucked at undergrad.

Your undergrad GPA can be interpreted in 2 ways: If you had a good undergraduate GPA, this shows that you are a solid and consistent student. On the other hand, if you did poorly in undergrad but then did excellent in dental school this may show a new found maturity. You can argue your case if this ever came up in an interview.

In addition, the undergraduate GPA may hold more weight if you are applying to a 6 year program. The med school admissions people will be looking to see if you can handle their curriculum.

🙂

Freakin fantastic...the last thing I need was my lousy gpa to follow me around every where.

Dammit.

Undergrad GPA matters at like 1% of programs. All the others don't care how low it was. Part II dental boards don't matter either because you're usually accepted before the school gets the info on them.

If you don't mind, what was your gpa and part I board score? Thanks.

and class rank. thanks.

GPA dental 3.995. Class rank 2nd or 3rd of 73. Part I board 97.

You don't need those numbers to get into a run of the mill OMS program though.

A couple of guys from my dental school class had 80's on boards and were probably in the top 1/2 of the class, and still got into good 4-year spots...both did externships and performed well enough that the rest didn't matter.

I think part I board scores are the most critical number to look at, with class rank a close second. Some will say it's the other way around, but these 2 factors are what gets you an interview.

Dental school GPA isn't as important because you can't compare from school to school. I only had a 3.5 GPA but there were only 5 people in my class who did better. Our #1 guy only had about a 3.75 because there were lots of courses where nobody got an A.

Undergrad GPA matters if they suck @ss. Programs such as Emory where they take both 6 and 4 year spots, require something like a 3.5 (not sure about the actual number) for the undergrad GPA in order for the applicant to be considered in the 6 year spot (stupid ass med school requirement). I think Vanderbilt may also have a minimum undergrad GPA requirement.

My dental school grades and Part 1 scores are rather stellar, but my undergrad grades was below 3.0. I think I applied to 24 programs. I was offered 10 interviews, in which some of the 6 year programs offered me the 4 year spot interviews.

Another kid in my class has decent dental school grades, I think 91 on part 1, and undergrad GPA of 3.5ish. He applied to 24 programs. He was offered 20 interviews.

Of course there are other confounding factors such as letters or rec, research, and personal statement, but you guys get the idea.

"Doggie",

It definately was your looks that got you in.

What about dental schools that do not have neither GPA nor class rank (PASS or NOPASS system)?

Well, you'd better do at least one of the following:

1. Score above 90 on the boards.
2. Do some externships and get good letters of rec.
3. Do some research and try to present/publish it.

-OR-

1. Sleep with the program director (even if you both share a Y chromosome); I like to call this the "Prison Shower Pathway" into OMFS.

Like they say...

the key to surviving in prison...

don't drop your bar of soap...

and if you do... just proceed as if nothing happened... do not bend over... to pick it up....

Gotta talk the talk, baby!

Let me know how mardi gras is.

Hot Doggie,
Wonder if i've seen u around....are you asian?

To be an OMFS you absolutely must have a 14" package. Unless you're north2southomfs, then 1.75" and knee pads will cut it.

Wow, pretty much a 4.0! Which little piddly class tripped you up?

At our school, the classes I have the most trouble with are any that involve fluoride, caries detection, etc -- pretty much any class in the community dentistry dept.

Good thing you are in dental school then!
