What does it take to get into an IVY league/High Tier psych residency program?

Like Harvard, Yale, Hopkins, Princeton, etc.

Are high STEP scores enough?

Actually, I was just having a look I think Princeton only has an internal medicine program.

That's the joke and it's on you

Ivy league doesn't mean a damn thing in residency. It's like saying you're a member of a dance troupe that won the Super Bowl, it sounds impressive to people that might not know what either of those things are and means nothing

You already started a thread on this: Anyone know anything about the psych residency program at Yale?

If you have more thoughts/questions on the same topic, just use that thread.

I don't think high steps are enough to make up for being an IMG in the bottom 10% of your class who had to repeat a year due to a failed exam. I also don't think it's common for someone with such a background to now suddenly get very high test scores.

But what does it matter? You can go to a not highly competitive residency program and come out the other side as a psychiatrist all the same.

There's a university hospital in Princeton and cause Princeton U has no medschool, the hospital is "The University Hospital at Princeton," clearly trying to use the prestige social status of an Ivy League despite that the hospital's not connected to Princeton U. Heck the real hospital it's a part of-Robert Wood Johnson has another hospital about 45 minutes north and they just call themselves "Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital."

Hey, someone fire a torpedo at me for saying this but if someone's failed a board exam, do I think they can still be a great doctor? Yes. The boards only test for one type of intelligence, but if that same person is all stuck up on the Ivy League, the notion that it's a better education simply because of social rep, wow, I will not feel sorry for such a person when said-program prejudicially nixes them for consideration.

Double-ouch. You actually thought this even after checking? They don't have a medical school-period.

I found it odd that Leonard's mother is a psychiatry professor-at Princeton.

Yeah one could argue maybe she's part of their psychology department. Still odd, especially since Big Bang Theory usually does ask academicians for consultation on their show.

She is a MD/PhD with research in neuroscience, so it’s possible.

You've not been in NJ for a while. The hospital moved down the road to Plainsboro and was call University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro. More recently, it became Penn Health Princeton Medical Center. No affiliation with RWJ for several years that I'm aware of (edit: ok seems this last sentence may be wrong? I don't know.)

You are right I have been out.

And wow, add to the cheese. It's not a Princeton U facility but they want the words Princeton and University in the title so even though it's not in Princeton, and not affiliated with Princeton U they find out a way to sneak in the Princeton U name.

Geez. Maybe they ought to make a Medical Center of Princeton, University Hospital, in the middle of bumble-eff that has nothing to do with Princeton, and it's not a University Hospital. You know put it as the closest hospital down in the bayou where those guys vacationed in Deliverance.

Reminds me of a buddy of mine back in college who had a girlfriend who was in school for being an x-ray tech and kept bragging about how she was in medical school. Maybe I'll make a for-profit piece of crap university can call it Harphard University, and when we make the logo I'll pay the artist to make the ph kind of look like a v.
