What does the lower case "n-" stand for in name of compounds??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The lower case "n" means normal hexanoic acid, which refers to it being unbranched, since there can be several isomers of that compound.

Like n-hexanoic acid

I thought that it was referring to an attatched amine, but what does it mean??

A capital N indicates a substituent is attached to a nitrogen. Like N-Methylmorpholine, where the methyl group is attached to the nitrogen.
