I'm applying to a pretty competitive field and I had a question about something and what it may mean ...

The PD at a pretty top notch institution in my field of interest contacted the Dean at my school like yesterday in order to "find out more about me" due to concern about not the best grades. It's my top choice right now and now I'm just concerned. Question in my head would be if they're considering whether or not to rank me at all or if it's a question of whether or not to rank me highly. Any insight would be helpful.

Does it really matter? Will you change your match list depending on what people on the internet say? You should know from reading the match algorithm that you shouldn't change anything based on whether you think a program will rank you highly or not. Sooo, just for the sake of making you feel good, then yes, I'd say it's a question about whether they'll rank you highly.

If you do want to listen to random internet advice, I wouldn't worry about it much.
If it is indeed a competitive field and your top choice, chances are that they're not going to go to number 50 to fill their spots. So they're probably debating on whether to put you really highly on thte list or just in the middle somewhere. My 2 cents.

Thanks a lot everybody.

I know it's stupid to look for advice from random internet people. And it won't change my rank list at all. Just freaks me out because while this isn't the most
"competitive" program on my ROL, it is the only place that has everything I want, so my 2nd is a REALLY distant 2nd in terms of where I want to go.

If their taking the time to call your PD they are interested in you and wish to rank you but don't want you to drop out for academic reasons. This is a good sign.

If this happened to me - I wouldn't change my ROL, but I would totally obsess about it and probably post something on here too. It is probably a positive thing - why would anyone waste the time to call your dean if they thought you were a loser.

Ditto to everyone.
Have you done everything you can do? As in, told them that they were your top choice, etc? If not, do so now. Contact all the residents you know there and let them know as well - they often can pull for you. Good luck!

STOP WORRYING!!

This is actually a good sign. For them to take the time to find out more about you means that you are meaningful to them. Since there are so many applicants, they don't have the time to call up every tom, dick, and harry. For them to call and inquire about you means you are extremely competitive.

Secondly, the dean at your school looks good if the students at the medical school match well. Do you honestly believe the dean is NOT going to give you a warm support.

THIS IS COMMON SENSE. God, I should charge students on SDN for my services.
