what does UCSD acceptable pool mean?

I was interviewed early december. Just found out that I was placed on the "acceptable pool". Does anyone know what it means? is it waitlist? how many people they generally take?

it means you've been waitlisted. we were told ~95 people are taken off the waitlist... good luck!!! it's not a horrible thing to be in the pool.

Hey hehaha, how did you find out you were on the "acceptable pool"? Did they send you an e-mail or regular mail telling you? Did you call them? I haven't heard anything since I interviewed on Dec. 1; if I don't get a notice of being on the "acceptable pool" does that mean I'm in the "unacceptable pool" (rejected)? Isn't it a bit early for schools to be compiling waitlists?

I find it difficult to believe that they accepted 95 people off the waitlist last year; that many people turned down UCSD?

I called them & they told me. I have no idea about acceptable pool...but I think it's like they wait until end of interview to see how many more spots left and take you from there. BUt somone also told me there's an "alternative list"..so I don't know what 's the difference

Okay, I got an "Acceptable Pool" letter via snail-mail from UCSD today, officially swimming in the pool. Does anyone know if ALL interviewees who are not immediately accepted are put into this pool, or are some people rejected outright post-interview? I'm trying to gauge my chances.

Hey Messer, I'm in the same swimming pool. I think a poster few months back who was in the acceptable pool got out and was accepted. So I think they keep reviewing those of us in the pool and may take them out if they feel like it. 🙂

i think all people not accepted are thrown in the pool. dean kelly said they would start re-reviewing applications in april sometime. good luck.

Theoretically it is possible to get pulled out of the pool at any time. A few years ago when I interviewed they said once they called someone one day before orientation. But a lot of the movement occurs around May 1 and tapers off quickly.

As for the number they take, I obviously don't know it but consider this: like everyone else, they have a pretty hard ceiling on the number of students they can start the year with, so they have to be conservative about predicting what % of those that they accept out-right will ultimately go there (don't want to underestimate the % and accept too many). And consider that if you can get into UCSD you can also get into other UCs and a lot of privates. So that nuber 95 seems plausible if you consider that some people will get pulled out of the pool only to turn them down for another UC or a nice private.
