What does UMDNJ-SOM have to offer?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Honestly, I had expected more specialty matches from that list - according to what the claims are about UMDNJ. But it wasn't bad or anything.

So - any current students want to comment on how awfully uncomfortable the desk chairs/full classrooms are or aren't?? It's hard to imagine sitting there all day! :scared:

gotta b careful about the match list cuz alot of ppl may not want 2 match in2 specialties. although our physio prof told me someone from 2005 got a 96%ile on her comlex and matched in2 derm but i don't c that listed on the 2005 match list (unless he got the year wrong). we're a do school known 4 attracting ppl 2 family med or more primary care specialties but that doesn't mean when students do try 2 match in2 specialties, that they don't do well. if paula says that 90% of ppl get their top choices, i'd go more by that. and the fact that we generally do well on the boards from what i hear. dep what ur eventual goal is, if u wanna do MD ortho...then that'd b difficult anywhere (even an md school).

i don't go 2 class much (if at all) and yes, the chairs r uncomfortable but the school is open 2 getting us new ones and we're encouraged 2 make suggestions 2 dean krueger (and have done so but i guess they haven't found the "right" chair yet). but they're not *that* bad, we've all survived sitting in them all semester. the 2nd yrs 4 almost 2 yrs now. some ppl bring in pillows/cushions and there's even a 2nd yr w/ a back prob who brought in his own chair and it stays in the back of class. plus they give u breaks fairly often during classes.

wouldnt it be wiser to look at the places that people that wanted to specialize went to rather than the number of people that specialized? Not everyone wants to do an uber-competitive specialty.

You really have it in for those chairs, don't you?

 I really do!! I just can't imagine sitting in one of those things all day, for hours and hours, and hours, in a fairly crowded, dark classroom with no windows.... Without feeling a lot of pain in my brain about "Why oh why did I choose to go to medical school in the first place?".... OWWW!! 😛
By far this is the anchor weighing down the otherwise excellence of this school!!! LOL!! I keep thinking, "I'd love to go there, but can I really sit in those chairs, in those rooms, for 2 years straight?!!" :O

If I get in I might bring a little pillow or something.

After finals for the past 3 days my back and neck are aching. And that's in more comfortable chairs.

But they're going to knock down the walls between those two classrooms and make that one big room for first year. Then second year will have the hall downstairs.

Is there a place to plug in laptops there to take notes? My laptop batter only lasts 2.5 hours.

It may be a trick to get everyone practicing OMM on their necks & backs, too... hmm...

But are they really gonna knock down the walls for a bigger room (I know the class size is bigger, too)? I feel relieved... phew!

They're increasing the class size?

That's what I was told on the tour.

Some OMM would be sweet right now. Gotta wait until I go home tomorrow to harass by bf into a back massage.

i've heard that eventually they'll increase the class to 150 to answer the nation's/government's call 4 more physicians 2 all med schools. i have also heard that they r going 2 knock down the wall b/t the 1st/2nd yr classrooms and make it in2 1 room...and also look in2 more space 4 a another classroom.

yes, there r outlets along the back walls in both classrooms where ppl plug in their labtops. the school is wireless so u can also download the ppt presentations and write notes in them as lecture progresses.

i agree. i was just pointing out that ppl shouldn't look at the match list and b worried cuz 1) alot of ppl didn't specialize and 2) there weren't alot of ppl matching 2 their particular (the potential incoming student's) specialty of interest.

it deps on 1) what ppl want 2 match 4, 2) where they try 2 match and how competitive that location is, 3) if they got their top choices, etc..

i think ppl should figure out what they want in the end (nice classmates, E-ROAD/ADORE competitive residencies, etc) and what place will get them there so match lists should be used w/ care. i think som can help get ppl whatever res they want (unless its an md program known 2 b snobby 2ward do's in general and i don't think those r the majority) but its an individualized choice cuz med school is more than just a means 2 getting a residency...there's so much more in b/t. good luck everyone w/ ur decisions and happy holidays!

Sure - that's understood.
But I was led to believe that there was a high % of people specializing, going into competitive specialties, etc. from there, and didn't see it reflected in the match list so much, that's all. To me, the more important thing is what % of students matched at their 1st or 2nd choice, and it's very high there, which is encouraging!

So between which schools are you deciding?
I've limited myself to two schools from the begining of application process so the decision is extremely easy for me =)

is anyone else tossing around the idea of DO/PhD if they wind up at UMDNJ?

I know I'd do research either way, and this seems like a great opportunity to master it. Just not sure about paying for the extra degree and some of the other fine points.

I've thought about doing a DO/PhD as well, but I also have the same concern about paying for the extra degree...theres always the option of DO/MS, i guess.

absolutely, that's been my intention from the begining...the only problem is I hear you can only do the research on stratford campus, which is in conflict with my particular research interest.

the phd part is covered (its the only dual degree where u don't have 2 come up w/ money 2 pay 4 the 2nd degree; although 4 the do mba, i think 1 of the girls applied 4 a scholarship from rowen who awards the mba).

it used 2 b that the school also paid ur medical tuition but there is talk that this yr's graduating do phd ppl r prob the last 2 get that. so u'll most prob still have 2 pay the med tuition part. they take 2 ppl every yr and u have until fall semester 2nd yr 2 apply. they won't pick the candidates when u matriculate cuz they've had probs w/ ppl deciding 2 drop out and having 2 pay back the money so they now give u 1st yr 2 go 2 grad school seminars w/ the gsbs and 2 rotate in labs 2 make sure u "really" know what u're getting in2 and wanna do research. we'll find out this spring/summer, who got in2 do phd 4 our yr since there's more than 2 ppl applying (and 1's a 2nd yr applying). u also have 2 maintain a no lower than high pass (basically a B, get over 80% in all classes w/o a curve) 2 get in2/stay in the DO Phd program. sounds not 2 difficult but sometimes is when u have an exam w/ only 40 q (or sometimes less), missing 3 q already dropped u a letter grade, and u can do that from being tired, misreading a q, or just careless errors.

the man 2 talk 2 about do phd is dr hock who's the head of that. [email protected]
it used 2 b u could do ur research anywhere - another school, pharma company, nih...but last i saw dr hock, he said the committee was thinking of making the candidates do it on our campus (stratford) since our campus is the place funding the student. but that hasn't been set in stone yet and i will talk 2 him again about keeping the status quo (ie, being able 2 do the research anywhere part)

👎 for bumping a 3 year old thread!
