Hey guys,

Quick question, if I have several X's not a major thing, just the repeat was put in wrong, will this slow down the application process? In addition I have a few more questions.

1) What do X's mean?

2) Will the X courses be counted towards my average? Do I have to resubmit and recertify my application b/c of the X's? Also what does O mean?

3) I am given the option now to request academic change if I want. Is this standard, or is it only an option if something is wrong?

4) I am in the verification process, what does that mean what are they verifying? Is it my grades, or my course classification? If so what does processing entail?

5) When in the verification stage, do they change your course classifications (the way that I classified them) or does this occur during the processing stage?

6) What is the typical turnover from verification stage to processed stage?

Thanks.

From what I can tell, the verification process is basically checking your transcript against what you submitted. An "X" means they disagreed with something you entered (grade, course type, etc..) and changed it to what they consider the correct classification. Too be honest, I'm not sure if schools look poorly upon the "X" next to a course (Why couldn't you follow directions, or did you lie?). They may not care. I would look at the changes they made, and if you disagree with a change call AMCAS to see why it was made. At that point, you should appeal if you are not happy.

Sup there,

No I didn't lie. I just had repeat courses, that I put as repeats as second time I took them which makes sense, however b/c on my transcripts it was counted as no credit the first time, they used that. If anything this works in my favor. But good to see you immediately assumed I was trying to scam something, nice.

Actually, I was listing the reasons the school might look poorly upon the X's. I have a couple of my own. But, anyways, you're welcome for the help.

where are you supposed designate that the course is repeated? the first time you list the course, the 2nd time or both?

I think you all should look more closely at the AMCAS application, last year when I saw X's I read a little further and there was a key that explained it

Same thing this year, plus there's been at least one thread previous to this one about it. People neither read instructions nor search before starting new threads, that might be like work.

Hey Merc,

It says course verified with correction. Now how about all the other questions I had, can someone answer these. Thanks.

p.s. For trident, on my application they have it both times. On mine I listed it after, they changed it to before and left mine from after. Dont' know, doesn't make sense to me.

A few X's are nothing to get worried about. On a complex application you're bound to have a few minor disagreements with AMCAS. I got X's for not marking both instances of a repeated class as repeat. I also got an X for some of my P/F and thesis courses; I'm not even really sure what they changed.

1) the key is at the bottom of your printed AMCAS app:

/ - any course verified without correction;
X - any course verified with correction;
O - any course listed on the Academic Record but not reflected on an official transcript; format corrections were not required;
Ox - any course listed on the Academic Record but not reflected on an official transcript; format corrections have been made;
/= - a type of coursework not meant to be verified.

(the Ox is an O with an x in the middle. The /= is a not-equals sign.)

2) yes, X counts. you don't need to resubmit.
3) probably standard, not really sure.
4) verification means they're comparing your printed transcripts to your app.
5) you may see corrections early, or sometimes they won't show up until the app is marked processed.
6) 2-6 weeks, I think.

Call AMCAS if you have any questions, they'll help you out.

:laugh:

I had 23 X's because someone at AMCAS couldn't add up my hours to figure out my class standing. My pre-med advisor managed to talk them down to 8, which still shouldn't have been there, but they wouldn't change anything else. She also called my state's med schools to get their opinion on X's and advised me to send a letter everywhere I'd applied briefly explaining the revision, to clarify exactly what kwgold said: I had neither lied nor been sloppy when preparing the transcript.

Only one interviewer brought it up, saying something about AMCAS being idiots.

To second what others have said, just a few isn't a big deal. Good luck. 🙂
