Hey guys,

Obviously I know that dental students focus on the anatomy, pathology, and physiology of the mouth, head, and neck but do dental students still learn the complete anatomy and physiology of the rest of the body? I just don't want to be disappointed if dental school ignores other areas and systems of human functionality and structure since I think all of it is amazing.

Yes, we learn the physiology of the entire body. In addition, at Maryland, we study the anatomy from the pelvis up.

we arent in med school we dont get indepth about much besides the head and neck... i know that from my experience i had more indepth classes in undergrad about the heart, lung and biochem.

I think it probably varies from school to school, but many of our physio professors are from the med school and they use the same pdfs/ppts that they use at the med school.

But yes, in general we learn much more about the head and neck than med students do and somewhat less about everything else.

What about the non-clinical aspect of dentistry, how much of the business side, like running a practice, do you learn. Obviously this is not as important as the other things but it is still an important part of providing good health care.

you learn how to get slapped in the face, graciously say 'thank you', and turn the other cheek.... until you get your degree in hand. Dental school is merely a foundation from which to build. The irony of dental school is that you learn a lot but you also learn that it is not to your advantage to think for yourself in dental school. Those that are most successful in dental school are those that understand it's not about knowing the answer it's about knowing what that specific instructor's answer is in many cases.

This is the stuff that makes this website great (and worth visiting)! Appreciate your honesty, keep it coming so we can survive the blue-haired profs (these superheroes sure keep their cape's so clean!).
