I have noticed alot of problems in these threads concerning email acounts. Perhapes we should jot down which ones are the worst and best so people next year won't run into problems and will have an account set up before they fill out their AMCAS application.

1. I have yahoo. It did send my UIC secondary invite into bulk but since I check my mail daily it didn't delete it. I think you can change how frequently bulk is emptied. I did pay the $20 to increase my mailbox size to 25MB which is well worth it to get more space over the 4 MB free size.

2. Hotmail gets filled up way to fast. And when I was president of our pre-med society and I sent out emails to the students on our mailing list, the hotmail ones got bounced back all the time.

I personally use two different addresses.

One is a hotmail account. I use this every time I sign up for something online.

The second is more private, and I use it for professional contacts (AMCAS, schools, etc) and regular correspondence with friends. This is through a private ISP, and has more bandwith, unlike the free sites.

This just seems to work for me, although I do have to check two different places for my email.

I use my school email addess and I have not had any problems because I have ample storage space and easy access to more space on the web via ftp.

Why don't you guys use your schools email ? I have hotmail just because of my MSN IM. Otherwise i think it's the worst free email around. Yahoo and Lycos are much much better than hotmail and you don't get 400 spam emails a day!

A lot of school's have spam filters in their e-mail systems.

I think a bigger problem is that any e-mail address you have will eventually get on the spam lists. There's no way around it. I didn't have a problem with my e-mail address for the first 2 years I had it, but last year it's been giving me lots of problems. I probably get 5 pieces of spam (mostly porn), for every 1 piece of real e-mail. Too much to look through. If it seems like spam from the title, I just delete it.

The only way to be safe, IMO, is to give every school you applied to a call once a week for a status check. E-mail is just too unreliable.

Nothing is completely safe.

I use my email address with my own domain name for the secondaries (I have it for my business). The damn web hosting service went down during the first week of Sept., the only time in 2 years...and my top choice school sent me a secondary during that week, which I did not know about! 😡

Fortunately they sent a reminder 6 weeks later and were willing to extend the deadline.

I have not had a problem with my trusty yahoo account...

i guess when i run out of my 6mbs of space....then ill think about paying for what should be free email 😉.

no school account since ive been out of school more than a semester.

For those who use Yahoo Accounts:

I received a weird email today saying that my billing info were outdated and I needed to update it (I use Yahoo's premium email service so I can send and receive emails with Outlook Express). It turned out that that email may very well be a scam. I clicked on the link and it linked to a NON-SSL site that askes for username, password, credit card info, bank checking account info, etc., ALL IN ONE PAGE.

Although it looks legit, Yahoo rarely askes for info that way. You always have to log-in first, and Yahoo always use SSL site for sensitive info like that. Also there's no reason for it to ask for my banking info if I already have a credit card on file.

All those tipped me off...thank god I didn't submit all those info!
