What exactly are Postbaccalaureate Programs?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey there,

I'm currently enrolled in a post-baccalaureate pre-medical program at Loyola. Basically, they're formal (either certificate-granting or non-certificate-granting) programs that offer advising, financial aid, rec letter writing, application compiling, and individualized plans to help a person complete their pre-health admissions requirements. These programs boast pretty decent acceptance rates to med schools, but I think that's because they admit people whom they think are academically qualified.

I applied in '99 to Loyola and was accepted, but my classes are full of people who take pre-med classes a la carte, without ever having enrolled in the program.

Basically, I think Post-Bac programs translate to "evening courses offered to working adults." It's an amazing opportunity for people who have decided to go back to medical school, vet school, etc. You take classes at your own pace, and according to your work schedules. Some places like Bryn Mawr are what people like to call "academic boot camp" where really motivated students complete their pre-reqs in a year; the post-bac programs for Bryn Mawr and Columbia are directly linked to Brown med school as a feeder.

Thanks for all the information about the different programs offered. I will have to check them out.
