Hey there,

just wondering what an internship is all really about. From what I've gathered up, it's usually a year of being at the hospital with the OMFS residents and faculty-- a chance to dive-in to the world of OMFS, day in and day out.. I have a few questions regarding this, though..

Are you just an observer? Or do you actually get to participate in procedures and get to do treatments like third molar extractions, implants, bone grafts, etc...

Also, how difficult would it be to get accepted into an internship? Do they really increase your likelihood of getting accepted into an OMFS residency?

Thanks.

You will do a lot of dental alveolar surgery. You will be at the mercy of the OMFS senior and chief residents. You will do lots of scut. Lots of our interns go on to OMFS residencies. Your grades and exam scores still count.

not dissimilar to the regular 1st yr schedule
days in outpatient clinic seeing consults, doing 3rds extractions and I and Ds, taking call every 3rd night, completing loads of orders for floor patients
in terms of bone grafting, implants, etc... after chiefs and seniors get their pick it trickles down to the 4th yrs etc. Interns didn't see too much of that stuff at my program
the interns at my program usually matriculated the following year as regular OS residents. you gotta work a bit harder than the 1st yrs while not trying to show them up
stay under the radar , be a team player, be likable .

Would you be applying for the internship at the same time as the OMS residency?
Anyone done the internship and then ended up as a general dentist?

For those that do a GPR to land an Internship to get into a 6 year program, I gotta hand it to them, that's determination.
