On SDN it seems to be anyone that starts a thread with less then 100 posts. You are ok.

at sdn, they come most often in the form of posts like:

"omg i got a 42 on the mcat, do you think i'll be ok? i thoguht i'd get a 44"

"i was a prostitute in college, do you think this is ok for med school admissions?"

heh. good entertainment
 
Here is a typical troll post.

"I made a 45Q, and I have a 3. 999 GPA. I volunteer 1000 hours in a cancer hospice, I have a nobel prize, and I speak 25 languages fluently. Considering my subpar GPA, do you think the Q in the writing section will hurt my chances?"

Yeh but I find a lot of times the term is thrown around at people who seem genuine albeit stupid. It's used a little freely at SDN.
 
To make it simpler... a troll is someone who's looking to start an argument.

I think a lot of the WAMC questions that people are quick to label trolling, e.g. "I have a 3.56, 39R, but I have very little in the way of clinical experience... should I apply this year or wait 'til next year," are totally legit. Some people just don't know, because they're uninformed. They're not trolls. Sometimes, they're looking for a confidence boost or an ego stroke. These people aren't trolls either. Sometimes, they're just looking to brag. I don't see that as trolling, though... because the person hasn't said anything inflammatory... yet.

We can't leave out the best trolls like HEADintheCLOUDS and Misterioso (or whatever that name was). They are much more subtle and instead of asking directly inflammatory questions, ask decent enough questions in an aggravating way. The best way to spot them is to look for inconsistencies in post history. One day they're a holier-than-thou derm resident, the next they're a med student one-upping the attending. Stuff like that.
