So what exactly is underrepresent, undeserved, or underprivileged? How does a population qualify as one of these groups? Also, how do you feel putting it on your app. Personally, I work with kids. Even though my organization isn't exactly meant for any of these groups, my kids are minorities from low income families and in a pretty bad neighborhood. Having volunteered in a tutoring place before, the kids here are so much harder to work with and I feel like I am accurate to portray myself as helping the less fortune. Yet, I feel morally conflicted to call them these if I were to put them on my application. Can anyone help?

I mean if you feel bad putting a label, then just describe the kids you worked with just like you did in the OP.

Under represented = a demographic that is not present in a given field, industry, system in a proportional amount to the local/regional/national population.

Under served = coming from a background in which support - whether emotional, physical, monetary, educationally, or health care - was and/or is not present

Under privileged = coming from a background in which opportunity for vertical or horizontal career, educational, and geographic movement was and/or is limited

My bad, I gave them the wrong definition:

Undeserved = One who is unworthy or not to be counted as a potential recipient of honor, gifts, rewards, or success.
Maybe I quoted the wrong poster and OP really did want to know what "undeserved" means, in which case I apologize for the unwarranted assumption.

So in the application, are these tags put on by you or they have to be officially put on by the volunteer organization?

Why tag or label? Just describe the population without judgment. They are minority kids from low-income families living in rural area/innercity neighborhood -- whatever. We can draw our own conclusions.
I remember in one thread one of the verified experts say there is a difference in volunteering for a place that is meant for middle class kids and a place that is meant for kids from low income background. How does an admission officer know if an applicant is being truthful in describing their student population?

How does an adcom know if the volunteering experience even happened, let alone the community you served is correct? There is a huge honor code in all of medicine. One lie at any point in your resume/CV/Credentials will ruin your career so thats the motivating factor. If an adcom is really that skeptical if a population you volunteered in is middle class vs low income, the Internet exists to google more about that organization. Write what is the truth thats it

Google is our friend. We can Google the organization you claim to have worked for, we can Google Map the location and "drive" around the neighborhood, we can use city-data website to learn more about the education and income of the area.

Happy 21st birthday, Google; I can barely remember life without you (but it involved a lot of paper).
