I got a letter from UVa (where I am enrolling this August) touting something called Tuition Management Systems. It says it allows me to spread my education expenses over smaller monthly installments. I am funding med school with loans so what advantage is there to me to spread the payments out? It just seems like a way for me to get in big trouble by spending my finaid on stuff before tuition is due. But I've never done this before so I'm probably missing something. Anyone with any idea what this is good for (other than those lucky souls whose families are paying for school)?

i'm also starting uva med in august and was wondering the same thing... i'm thinking that if we're paying with loans it doesn't apply so much. i'm going to call the fin. aid office this week though.......

I'm just about finished my first year at UVa med now (just three exams to go...), and I remember getting that mailing last year. I think they send that to all UVA students, but don't know many, if any any med students that use that. If you're using loans, there's no reason to use the tuition management system, as your loan will be disbursed to the school, along with any scholarships the school has given you, at the beginning of each semester, when tuition is due. If you're not using the tuition management system, you can just ignore the mailing, and in July (I think), you'll receive the real bill directly from UVA along with your financial aid award letter. I think you may get a preliminary version of your financial aid award sooner, but the official version comes in late June or July, with the forms you have to sign and return. Good luck, enjoy your summer, and look forward to seeing you at UVA in the fall!
